Beg/steal, and get another £500.

Then buy a 172. Job done. :)

Again I'm bias :p But if a Clio is really not viable then...

With 4k or less I'd be buying either:

106gti
306 gti-6/rallaye or however it's spelt (4k will get you a nice enough one to discount the xsara imho, if we were talking 2k it'd be xsara all the way)
200sx (slightly bigger buy hey :p)
Prelude 2.2 VTEC (see above)
Maybe even a pulsar?

Fiat Bravo HGT

155bhp 2.0 20V

You would get to pick from the best examples with £4k. Loads of kit like leather, air-con etc. No less reliable than anything else in its class really.

Just something else to throw into the mix.

It's hardly in the same league as a Clio 172 or a 306 GTi-6, is it?

Thats not fair. To achieve almost 40mpg in your gti your driving like a granny. Drive like a granny in the gti6 in 6th at 60 and you ll get 40mpg too. If it does not his lambar senser needs replacing. Its a fair bit faster, especially when into illegal speeds :p My brother has a 106 gti and me a gti6. Both are awesome cars though I prefer the faster, better specced 6. I can sit back on a hot summers day with a bit more room and aircon on in the 6 :)

To be fair, 40mpg was a figure from a week at work, where I tend to drive "normally" between schools - i.e. no more than 5000rpm unless overtaking, no harsh take offs etc. I brimmed the tank, drove 320 miles, then squeezed 37 litres of fuel in up to the second click. 37 litres is 8.2 gallons near enough. 320/8.2 = 39 and a bit mpg.

That 320 mile figure can drop to around 300 miles when I've been driving it hard, up to 7000rpm on the back roads, driving it properly. Even so, 300 miles (and assuming a tank running on fumes to get it there) is still 35mpg.

I'm very impressed with the fuel consumption on it!

Yes, it is very good. But still if you drove 6 like that you would get the same economy :) Especially 70 mph + when the gti hits 4k at 80 :(

I just drove my brothers to the shop, awesome round the roundabout.

He;s already said no fiats, plus servicing isn't particularly cheap even from a specialist, esp when it comes down to the good old cam belt! Looking arond the belt costs the same on the Bravo than on the 20VT Coupe to change most places. Ok it's not horrendous but still a lot for a car like that imho.

No **** sherlock, I'm talking about the old Honda you posted, as you well know. This is a hot hatch thread, kindly keep Mondeo talk out of it.

I hardly think a turbocharged CRX can be called a banger tbh

my celica has a hatch, I think hot hatches are generally accepted with 3 doors and a stubby body.
