This is probably a stupid question but i'm going to ask anyway :D

If i were to buy a 20" widescreen TFT, and wanted to play games in 1280x1024 to get better FPS or if my card wasn't good enough for a higher res, what would it look like? Would it have big black boarders around the sides, or would it stretch to fit the screen? If it stretched would it look ridiculous?

as Raymond has said, some will do 1:1 pixel mapping and give you borders (NEC LCD20WGX2, Philips 200W6CS for instance) and others don't have this option and so would stretch to fill the screen (Viewsonic VX2025WM for instance)

It's actually the Viewsonic VX2025WM that i was planning on buying. I am in 2 minds wether to buy a 256mb x1800xt or 512mb x1800xt. If i buy the 256mb card and play at 1280x1024 would the stretched picture look ridiculous (i.e. big long bodies and fat heads)??

They would look fatter rather than much taller. If you get the 512mb X1800xt then it will handle the monitors native res with ease and should give better fps than the 256mb version.
