Well good 5.1 speakers are:

Creative GigaWorks 5.1 G500 THX Pro Gamer Speakers
Logitech Z-5400 THX Certified 5.1 310 Watts Speakers
Logitech Z-5500 THX Certified 5.1 505 Watts Speakers

all under £200.00

Good 7.1 speakers are:

Creative GigaWorks 7.1 S750 THX Speakers

Now you will have to shop around to find these speakers at £200 or less.

Good hunting.

The z-680s are very good and you can get them for £125. Negligible difference between these and the z5500s from what I've read.

If that's the case then the Megaworks would be good too if they can be found at all. I find the Megaworks more versatile than the Z-680 (the later being better for movies/games than for music).

On a side note, the Gigaworks S700 is identical to the S750 minus two speakers (which you may optionally acquire later). If I am not mistaken, the G500 lack the tweeters, one of the thing that made the S series great (at least compared to other surround MM speakers). Still, if the G500 is anything like the Megaworks, then they should be very fine too.

I agree that the z680s are best for movies and games. Music is pretty good if you spend the time tweaking the settings. Have you considered a quality pair of headphones instead? Better sound quality for the money imo.

I agree that headphones can get better SQ for the money. With an X-Fi the surround effect is as good too. That said, I still use my Gigaworks along with my headphones. There are days I just don't feel like wearing something on my head, or feel like getting some floor thumping bass. Not that often, but happens.
