Ok, say for example I had a great idea, one that could potentially make and save companies a lot of money. Would I have the right to go and patent that idea and in turn potentially make a shed load of cash? If so, how would I go about it? :p :)

As far as i know to have intellectual rights to an idea you need to prove its your idea and you plan/can put it into action.

For a patent i believe your looking at more than £500. International patents cost many times more. Either way, once people get a hold of your idea you will probably see many duplicates meaning you actually need a bigger head start. If you can, you want to offer a global solution, with better service than other emulators can achieve. You have the advantage of time remember.

you can patent a design (not sure if there is an equivalent for a service) if it's not public domain (ie dont tell us).

I think this then means other companies cant copy you for 20 years? but i dont know.
