Private plate and insurance write off - who keeps the plate?

Am I right in thinking that if your car is written off and you have a private plate, your insurers may choose to keep the plate unless agreed otherwise beforehand.

Is this is the case?

It's your plate so I'd expect that you keep it (unless the insurance company pay out for the price of the plate too)

When my dads car was stolen it had his private plate on it and he got his back (after waiting a year though)
