How easy to fit are the alarm systems you can buy and fit yourself? I know it won't do anything for the insurance but it'd ease my mind a bit knowing it's there.

There's loads I know of for £30-40 that seem ok for what they are, but are they really worth it?

Thanks guys :)

How good are you with electrics and reading wiring diagrams?

I have quite a bit of experience with electrics (but no previous experience with wiring diagrams) and fitted a CAT2 alarm/immob I'd bought a few years ago, in about a 4 hour period over a couple of days.

Pretty easy, and much fun :)

Flashing red LED wired up to a hidden switch, about as much good as protecting your car as an average £40 cheapo alarm.

I had just such a device along with a "Vecta" Immobiliser sticker (not the immobiliser) on my old Escort Turbo, for 6 months the car was'nt touched, then, it got stolen..... :o  :D

You don't need an alarm.

Your car is:

a) Not old and ***** enough to be used as a cheap ride home for a lazy chav
b) Not expensive and flash enough to be targeted becuase it's a flash car
c) Not fast/useful enough to be stolen for use in crime

Therefore, no alarm needed. An alarm won't stop kevin the chav nicking your stereo anyway.

Before you start, my car conforms to all of the above as well.

I'm an electrical engineer ;)

Oh, better pay someone else to do it then. :p

I wouldn't mind an alarm in the mx-5 as at least it would wake me up if some **** slashes the roof. But I might just get one fitted properly as I'll only make a mess of it. :o
