There is a building, i cant remember which one it is, you can build it in one of your cities, and if you do, it eliminates all happiness in the city. Put that in your most notorious city and youll be laughing.

Build things such as small wonders, oracles, temples etc, they help keep unhappiness down, sometimes you can have a level 2 or 3 city and people feel "crowded" just part of the game i think ;p

Civ4 is a class game though :)

You can't, be careful in early game not to jump straight into bulding farms on flood plains, so your population doesn't boom out of control for technology. Always build on rivers so you can get waterwheels and state property later on and reap the benefts. Also the rivers give a health bonus. The absolute pimp of a city would be:

On a hill (defensive)
Coastal for the (economic benefit)
Has a river adjacent on both sides of the hill the hill but floodplains are more than 1 tile away. (health and defense)
Forests adjacent for chop rushing (don't chop the last forest tile adjacent for health bonus)
Hills preferabley one with a metal ore for fat production bonus.

You rarely get that lucky but those are the things you are looking for. :)

control your (population) growth, build happiness buildings, switch civics if necessary, hook up all those happiness resources and make sure your cities are linked. if that fails kill a few with slavery :D (although it makes them dead unhappy in the long run).
