There I was about to order my new rig, when I discover that.....

No more Opteron 170's
No more DFI Ultra-D's

What's going on?

So with the mother board gone as well as the CPU I guess I might be looking at Conroe instead........

But too expensive I think

S939 is End of Life, so new stock won't be coming in.

The S939 X2s should be seeing hefty price cuts this month though, so keep an eye out for a bargain :)

The Opteron 170 was £293 right? The Conroe E6600 is £252 and in some games at 1600x1200 it's twice as fast! You're better off with a conroe. Even the E6400 is on par with an FX62 and it only costs £180, that's what i'm getting.

Yea.........Only problem with the new stuff is the ram costs three times as much and the motherboards are double the price!

So S939 is still much cheaper!!!!!

That just isnt true though, you can get a decent board for ~£100 and G.Skill DDR2 2x1GB for £117

That's exactly what I was gonna say. The 975X boards that are out are for enthusiasts and serious overclockers, the 965 and nForce range will be out soon and offer better value. Same as DDR2 memory, it'll become cheaper as time goes on.

That's the thing. I am planning on clocking it as much as poss.

If I went for the Conroe I would want the 1066mhz ram and a suitable mobo to go with, otherwise it won't be running to it's full potential

Having 1000MHz RAM is not a neccesity, the 800MHz RAM will get the E6600 upto 3.6GHz, probably twice the overall speed and performance of an FX62. If you look, the G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 can be had for £135!

I think you're being a tad arrogant and missing the point of how much better a conroe at that speed would be over an overclocked Opy 170.

*edit - you could get the above memory kit and wait for the 1000MHz RAM price to drop.*

What about the ram latencies? I'm sure I read somewhere that Conroe chips didn't require fast latencies like the AMD's do....

And just out of curiosity, what performance difference would ther be between 800mhz and 1066mhz fsb with the E6600? Anyone know?

So how does the clocking work then, given that the Conroe's don't have a HTT like the AMD's do.

HTT is a new thing... it works the same as it worked with athlon Xps, durons, northwoods, prescotts, pentium Ds etc. :p

You just increase the FSB rather than the HTT and theres no need to change a multi.
