I'm thinking of upgrading to either a 20" or 24" widescreen display so need a card that is capable of running games in 1680 or higher at good framerates. I don't really want to spend more than 200 quid. From reading some threads here either 7900GT or X1800XT would be good candidates. What are these cards like for heat and noise as I would like it to be quiet too or is that too much to ask?

^^ that would work

or alternatively use a 7900gt instead of the X1800XT ;)

Costs more, slightly slower and doesnt support AA+HDR or software voltage control... as the x1800xt will have the zalman the only upside is lower power consumption.

7900gt

smaller (fits in small cases better), much cooler, better drivers.

but yeh.... no AA + HDR does indeed suck.....

Well it means it can't do AA and SM3.0 HDR, as seen in Oblivion, at the same time. I think they can do both for every other game that uses both. And the 7900gts overclock extremely well. With a Zalman and a volt mod you can get 7900gtx speeds (though obviously with less vram).

only thing x1800xt has over the 7900gt is the reliability.

if nvidia managed to sort out thier cards so that they don;t keep dying then 7900gt would be my primary choice.
