I don't see the point in that upgrade. You would be going from one dead end socket to another. 939 is in it's death throes. Better to upgrade to Conroe (or not so good) AM2. At least you would have a future upgrade path then.

Alternatively get a pci-e motherboard for your 754 rig along with a pci-e graphics card and stick with that until it's too slow to do what you want. The thing thats holding your current rig back is the 9600. The A64 3400+ is a decent cpu and depending on which one you have runs at 2.2ghz with 1024kb L2 cache or 2.4ghz with 512kb L2 cache. With a decent motherboard you should be able to clock them to either 2.4ghz for the Claw or 2.6ghz if it's a Newcastle.

Yes, youll see a good increase in games and a little in desktop, but only a little. Now if you over clock the opteron 146 like mine, youll find your pc runs a whole lot smoother and faster. Even my desktop is just less laggy.I am running mine at 2800mhz, which is a 40% overclock. My games, utils, programs all run a lot better.I cant believe the difference in my pc now since i have overclocked it.

Yer,

I mean, my cousin is getting this components cheap and the game he plays doesnt support dual core so there is no point in getting a Dual Core processor, and the conroe has only recently been released to id like to see how it performs. Plus its a hefty price for a half decent one.

You can always turn one core off if your game does not support dual core. And as for the heft price tag, an E6600 2.4ghz at £252 which can clock to at least 3.4ghz, in my eyes is amazing value for money.
