a while back there were rumors that Google was going to create its own web-browser, then suddenly we heard that it was going to start creating its own Office style apps.

and here's their first step.

google spreadsheets, it seems to be a rather dumbed down version of Excell - the bonus however is that anyone with a google account can access it and its completely free.

you don't need any software installed... other than an internet browser.
good move by google tbh... you can argue that OpenOffice is free as well and is almost an MSOffice clone - but its still a case of you need to download and install it etc...

It's weird really, but I can see Google really rivalling Microsoft if they keep progressing the computer-on-the-web philosophy. Decentralise everything, all across the network. It's like the ultimate in remote desktop-ing! Everything available from any machine.

The great thing about Google is that they give their employees a certain percentage of their time to work on their own projects.

Most of these cool little apps/utilities have been created by a Google employee in their spare time :)

Yep, the 20% rule. Google definately looks like a fantastic place to work.

Don't worry though, within 20 years, everybody will work for Google because Google will be everything. :D
