Ok, so you've read all the reviews. Visted all the myriad of different testing wesbites. You know that the x1800gto needs additional power, its longer than the 7600gt. But then the 7600gt uses 128bit memory interface whereas the x1800gto is 256bit.

It appears the x1800gto is the same price as the 7600gt. I have fought my way through all the reviews in this price range. Was going to buy a x1600 pro, until I realised they are rubbish. then focused on the x800 range, but then no shader model 3.

Then decided on a 7600gt. Was very happy with this choice, was going to go out and buy it. Then, I find out about the x1800gto. Is it possible to unlock the extra 4 pipelines on all the x1800gto's. I beleive you can on the HIS, but can you on the sapphire?

Which one would you buy. 7600gt or the x1800gto? Its a fine line isnt it.
I play oblivion a lot, and it appears the x1800gto is the one to go for. But then other games favour the 7600gt.

I'm stuck.

TBH I would spend a bit extra and get the X1800XT.

Out of those two the cards are very evenly matched in current games.

In Oblivion the X1800GTO should be quicker however in other games the 7600gt can sometimes beat the X1800GTO.

this man speaks the truth :) if you cant spend the extra though, go for the GTO. the only times the 7600GT puts a proper challenge to it is in OpenGL games (anything using the DooM 3 Engine generally, which isnt much) but even then the GTO still performs perfectly well.

Agreed for you it looks like X1800GTO or if you can stretch a little more the X1800XT which offers at least 75% more performance on average (well worth the extra imo).

Cant really stretch the budget. Got a little baba to feed. also having to buy mobo and cpu.

I think an athlon 64 3700 and x1800gto is better than my 2600+ and 9800pro.

especially for the £210 its going to cost me for both.

Want the x1800gto as I heard you open up the extra pipelines.

you can get a saphire x1800gto for £110. bargain.

Does anyone have one? Can you open the pipelines on it. It ramps it up to a x1800xl. If thats the case, then its the bargain of a lifetime.

i fitted one on a system i built recently, not all of them unlock though. as for available power, they score around 6800 3D05 marks at stock (just short of a 7800GT) so they are worth the money.

as said above, not all unlock, but even at stock its a good card & youre getting it for a good price. if you can unlock it to an X1800XL it will be even more of a bargain, but its the luck of the draw.

I thought about the x1800gto and at £110, its a very good price. I was really tempted by the fact that it might be unlockable to an XL but from what I've read on various forums, theres no guarantee on it happening and the percentage of people managing to do it seem quite low. If Oblivion is your game then the 1800gto would be the best choice.

I personally picked up a second hand x1800xt with a Zalman VF900 cooler for less than £150 and I have no doubt it'll be a vast improvement on my Geforce 6800LE.

not just oblivion, 99% of games using high AA and AF, the GTOs superior memory interface bests the 7600GT the vast majority of the time, in most things barring doom 3s engine, which is nvidia fanboy as its openGL and nvidia have always beat ATI in that respect

Id just put the extra £20 towards the x1800 XT and get a cheaper CPU like the 3500+, or even the 3200+, and just clock them up, will easily go past 3700+ speeds, got a 3500+ here, was going to get the 3800+, but the differance in games is something stupid like 5fps or less, so just went for the cheaper 3500+ and clocked it to 3800+ speeds, but then i put it back to stock as the differance was bugger all, i couldn't even tell. :D
