Quick q.. regarding the power hungry ati x1900xtx cards... would the following enermax liberty 400w psu be ok?

http://www.enermax.co.uk/products/psu/liberty/ELT400AWT/spec.asp

key specs..
DC Output Rating
+3.3V 26A 150W
+5V 28A
+12V1 20A 360W (30A)
+12V2 20A
+3.3V, +5V, +12V1, +12V2 Combined 377.8W
-12V 0.6A 22.2W
+5Vsb 3A
Total Power 400W

the pc il be using the card in has essentially a fx60cpu, 4x512mb of ballistix ram, 2x 300gig sata hdd's, nec dual layer dvd writer, pci 7.1 sound card.

also.. you reckon crossfire with 2 of the ati cards would be poss using this psu?

The 400w is, I believe, slightly lower than the manufacturers recommendations for an X1900XT, however it ought to be capable of running the system but you will probably be near the limit. As for Crossfire, I wouldn't. It might run but you would almost certainly be pushing your PSU to its limit and possibly beyond. If you can afford the rest of the hardware you can afford £70-100 on a decent 500w+ PSU, there is no point skimping on such an essential item.

If your system has got what is effectively an FX60(and not an actual FX60) then you must be overclocking which demands more from a PSU than just running at stock would obviously.

My 580 watt hiper died not long after my antec 480 watt then there was the 500watt ocz which cr"ped itse;f after a few months and I'm now running my rig on a 400 watt qtec lmao and no probs with the qtec, this one most hated psu has outlasted all the fancy expensive psus i've ever bought.

So I wouldn't sweat it to much, if a 400 watt qtec can power an x1900 xt, 5 hd's, 3 pci cards, all usb ports plugged in, opteron at 2.55v, ram at 3.2v,dvd, cdrw and not have a prob then you should be fine.

minimum spec for the x1900xt is usually 450W but give it a try and see what happens if, crashing etc then lack of power would be the first place to start!

i recommend at least 500W with good 12V rails... i recently bought a X1900XT and a Seasonic S12 600W PSU, my Hiper 580W PSU recently wore out, but that was for different reasons.. and if you are going to crossfire i really think you should go for a more powerful PSU than the one you mentioned... Tagan, Seasonic and Enermax are good to go into. The Enermax Liberty 500W might be better, i personally would go for one a bit more powerful.
