I run 500w Antec truepower and I hard lockup constantly (in windowsxp sp2).
The mouse cursor will stop and require reset.

Ironic thing is, It won't freeze if i'm playing a game, uninstall the drivers or use safemode

Iv'e tried just about all drivers there is to try.
Iv'e tried two new psu
Iv'e tried Disabling everything you can in the bios

Only thing left to try is the sledgehammer method of KIA.

I read in another thread you need 580w psu just for X1800 XT

Asus A8N32 Deluxe SLI
AMD 64 3700+
1GB GeIL ram (mem tested)
250GB SATA WD HDD (S.M.A.R.T tested)
Samsung DVD-ROM
Samsung DVDRW
Connect3D Ati X1800 XT 256MB GDDR
3 Akasa fans, 1 120mm

I feel 580w would be mass overkill imo. 6 lighbulbs

since it only happens after the display drivers are installed, I doubt it.

Like I said, it Doesn't crash when gaming.

here's a scenario:

Plays Games all day (Generals, Zero Hour, Red alert 2 and yuri's revenge)
gets bored and exits the game.
Clicks windows "start button" to start wmp and pc freezes. (NO dodgy noises in the system)

here's another:

Open WD Diag tools
chooses extended test, it starts.
doesn't touch the mouse, it's fine (afaik, never tried this)
moves the window around a bit just to test it freezes

Variation of above
Open WD Diag tools
chooses extended test, it starts.
doesn't touch the mouse, it's fine (afaik, never tried this)
moves the window around a bit just to test , then clicks start, it freezes.

Another variation of above
Open WD Diag tools
chooses extended test, it starts.
doesn't touch the mouse, it's fine (afaik, never tried this)
moves the window around a bit just to test and goes to settings under desktop properties, it freezes.

last one, plays music in wmp and does full screen visual's, gets out of full screen and bam, it's gone.

No reboot, no BSOD, no shutdown and no event log just a frozen cursor

Have you tried a clean install and then only installing the essential drivers?
I've had a similar problem with my pc. I've just done a clean install today and haven't had a BSOD happening yet. Its possible that there might be conflicts between drivers/hardware...by installing one thing at a time after the clean install you could pin-point the problem. But then again if you get lockups straight after the clean install then you're kinda back to square one.

Sounds like the motherboard disagrees with the card. This is very unusual, but can happen sometimes.
There were some issues with Nvidia cards on ATI chipsets a while back, but these were resolved pretty fast in most cases.

Only thing I can really suggest is giving Prime a decent 12hr plus run & seeing if anything comes up. You might also want to try different driver versions.

I had to do that, to know it's the video card / it's drivers
I installed one by one trying to reproduce the crash, only did once the display drivers where installed. And pretty quickly at that.

Iv'e already tried loads of drivers, including Omega's, iv'e gave P95 an hour run the other day with nothing coming up.

I know this problem is wierd, that's whats making me more angry about it.

Did a 15 hour [ram based] torture test.

What exactly am I looking for, lol.

Or should I have done a CPU test?

Not looked into Overclocking yet so new to these tools.

Have you tried updating your motherboard bios ? When I first got my 6600 Gt, I had hardware lockups (the machine would actually re-boot itself). No different drivers would solve the problem but a bios update fixed it immediately. Just a thought.

It seemed to have stopped after installing DX9.c.
Then again, I haven't put it through any of those scenario crash tests.
Just gave up on it to be honest.

Bios is up to date, although it's a beta
