I don't know a lot about that camera, deal seems ok though. Maybe consider a compact camera though, which doesn't eat batteries and that uses SD of CF memory (cheaper as it's more common).

Maybe SONY Cyber-shot DSC-W100, way way smaller, just not as large zoom.

No camera deal is 'cheap' if you don't get the camera you want.

If you give some (any) idea of what you are after, then the good folks here seem pretty forthcoming with advice on different possibilities.

Things to consider are (not exclusivley)
DSLR vs Compact, size, weight, flexibility, money pit, quality, convienence, ease of use....

Kelko or froogle can tell you where things are cheapest.
Joe T says it's a good camera.
There are a lot of good cameras though.

Yes its a very good camera, I've got this one and its one of the best ultra zooms at this sensor level. The only one better would probably be the Canon S3 IS but thats considerably more expensive.

.

There really are two types of cameras, those that do what you want them to do and those that don't!

Make a list of all the things you want to be able to do (control), White Balance, Shutter Priority, Aperature Priority, Bracketing etc, a list of all the features you want in a camera, an EVF, tilt LCD, image stabilty, easlily obtainable batteries etc. When you've made your list and taken good advice from the guys here and at the dp review site (http://www.dpreview.com/), then select your camera.

If you buy one and it doesn't have all the features you wanted, you will soon get annoyed and tire with it! A few extra pounds spent to begin with will last the life of a good camera.

Canon make good cameras

If you want to take photos in low light conditions (ie the pub) you'll should try to get a camera which can use a high ISO setting (ie 800, 1200).

The 5600 has a big zoom lens. This is good if you want to tke shots of something in the distance but makes the camera quite big. For the sort of shots you say you want to take you might not need a long zoom and a smaller camera that would fit in a pocket may be better. If so have a look at the fuji f11 which can be bought for about £150 now and has great performance in low light conditions.

If you don't mind the size of the 5600 then it seems to get good reviws.

Then the s5600 is perfect it can go as high as ISO1600. It's very good in low light.
