A collegue has asked me what upgrade options he has for the following system..

Compaq Presario 5000 Series
5WV296
AMD Athlon 1GHz (Thunderbird I believe)
128MB (100/133 MHz)
30 GB Hard drive (5400rpm, EIDE)

My initial (and to some extent, ongoing) thought was to scrap it and start again but I would be interested to hear other peoples suggestions are.

I've hunted around and found you can actually buy RAM that slow still and a new EIDE HDD could be fitted (I assume any EIDE would work OK) but it's still around £150 quid.

Any opinions?

Yeah mate - scrap it

I have enough old RAM, mobos, cpus and hard drives in the garage that would upgrade a rig like that for next to nothing but even then I would look at getting a new rig!

As jas72 says you can get a lot for £250 - 300 these days.

As I said - scrapping was my thought. You can build a Conroe based system (with integral graphics) for just over £400 or one based on the 805 (dual core - and upgrade path to conroe) for £350 or so..

Thanks for confirming my thoughts
