The laboratory is owned by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Eventually the machine could be used for a programme that ensures the US nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe and reliable, the DOE said in a statement.

why is it every time the bloody US government orders a super computer they claim its to be used "for a programme that ensures the US nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe and reliable" havent they got any other bloody ideas for the damn thing ?

every sodding time they get a super computer they say in the news that it will be used for the same thing... the nuclear weapons stockpile! surely one super computer is more than enough to run what ever nuclear simulation you want on it America! now how about getting off your fat arses and using that super computer for a little climate modelling, perhaps then youl get an idea of just how much your helping to **** up the planet.

Where do they plan to get 16,000 cell processors from considering Sony is having issues producing even just a handful?

I thought they were planning on shipping 2 million PS3s or something like that to USA and Japan by the end of the year? I wouldn't have thought the US government will struggle to get hold of 16,000, which is in the scheme of things quite a small number.

If they pay that much money for something so important maybe they dont want to say what its really going to be used for. The order itself is harder to cover up

Was the Cell not designed by a group of companies, as a processor for IBM or something first and for the PS3 second or third...

It most certainly was not desgined exclusively for use in the PS3, and the way things are going the supercomputer will be made, and available for the general public to buy, by the time the PS3 ships.

Yeah it was developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM together.

Sony has a stockpile of 3 million Cell proccessors ready to go into PS3's, they have no trouble manufacturing them. Its the laser diode thing they are having trouble with.

If you don't count the 20% cpu yields......
