I personally think the security at british airport is poo compared to e.g Russia and China.

I had to go through various checkpoints and fill out various forms in Beijing. When I landed in Heathrow (7th August) I was very surprised because I only had to fill out 1 form and show my passport to the Immigration officer didn't even see the metal detector or the x-ray.

well in Russia and China, it don't matter if you coming in or going out, they have the same procedure. :(

I certainly didn't get my luggage scanned ariving in moscow, though it was acouple of years ago. I've never come across anywhere in the world where you do, what would be the point when you've come off the plane?

Now in Russia, they check your shoes. In China they scan your luggage, alcahol is no go. They even check diplomats.

Weird, customs in iran were strict, searched your luggage, flicked through books to see if they were pornographic, no hope of taking alcohol in.

Diplomats is very weird, they can search their person to some extent but their luggage is invioble, they simple can't search it, it's a breach of international law if they have a diplomatic passport

Sensible precautions really, but a tad annoying, as I found out today that I'm going to Toronto on Sunday for a week for work. No way I'm putting my camera in the hold without a hard case, and I can't afford/haven't got time to buy one!

Ah well, maybe I'll take the Ixus.

Get a hardcase for your camera with a lock on, you can get decent secure ones for about 60-70 quid, can't remember where i saw them though....

You might struggle now, as I said earlier, there were 4 people buying hard cases in my local shop when i was in yesterday. Don't know how much they were though.

Also, depending on where you're going (ie. the US) locked hold luggage can be broken open by security officers if they feel the desire. There is a special padlock available to which they have the master key to avoid this though.

Your camera in hand luggage will be fine - just make sure the bag is within the size dimensions.
