Killing people is what the handgun was designed for; nothing else.

I disagree.

Without handguns we wouldnt have 'Whats the best handgun?' threads for teenage boys to get aroused over.

Isn't there some stupid US crime statistic that says the average US crime envolving guns (shoot out ) takes place at 9 feet or some really short range.

Best gun in the world is Goldfingers, cos you can have a smoke after you have shot the bloke.

Falling...
The only handguns I have ever fired are a Glock 9mm, Browning 9mm, Beretta 9mm, and a magnum 44 and a s&w 410s.

I have to say I prefered the Glock out of all them for balance - but I believe a lot of law enforcement swear by S&W. And since I'm never going to own a gun it's really irrelevant. A "good" gun is one you are confident in and have a feel for, that doesn't have a propensity for jams, breaches or falling to bits :p A gun is only as good as the user - but any idiot can shoot a gun and maim/kill someone.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "good" gun - but then again I'm no expert. Some people like them for their design and engravings, balance, feel, round capacity, ammunition size, accuracy etc...

I odnt know much about hand guns but i think the best hand gun is the one the is known to blow a human skull into half - Magnum 45 (or whatever is called). I watched a documentary where picture of the victim's skull was shown...God, i was convinced that gun is the best in the world.

The Desert Eagle is a show-piece gun. It's too big, heavy and weildy to be used in a defensive scenario. The recoil from the larger calibres (.50 AE) is too much for the majority of people to handle.

The GLOCK and HK USP are quite nice. The former a good "all-rounder" and a favourite for police officers due to its simplicity. The latter is a rather expensive handgun, more of a rolls royce of the pistol world.

The Browning HP (9mm) served me well in Northern Ireland. The Walther PP, PPK and P5 models served certain security forces personnel well in Northern Ireland as well.

The "best handgun" is like asking what is the best car. What criteria are you basing it against?

Ease of use? Glock or Walther P99.
Reliability? Glock, HK USP, Walther P99...
Concealability? The "Baby Glocks", Walther PPK, smaller revolvers and derringers.
"Stopping power"? Larger .45 ACP calibred handguns (Colt M1911A1, HK USP and Glocks in .45) and maybe a S&W .500 (the most powerful handgun in the world, as it happens.)

The best gun is the gun you have on you when you need it most.

One I've used was the 9mm Browning. This was in the lat 90's, don't know if they've changed it.
The more "specialist" units get the Sig Sauer P226, among others.

A gun is useless if you miss the target, as previous poster said .45's aren't weapons of choice for someone who needs a real gun. I don't think any professionals would choose a hand cannon over a good gun to use day in and day out.

On the range, i've used:

Glock 17,
Beretta 92f,
Sig Sauer,
.357 Magnum,
S&W 500 (.50 cal revolver.....insane and pretty pointless on a range),
.38 Police Special.

In my limited experience, the best of the above for the task at hand (range shooting) was the humble .38 revolver. It was accurate, easy to use and easy to load.

I've heard a lot of people say exactly the opposite - that anything less wont effectively stop someone. A 9mm may carry more bullets but if you need more than a few you're screwed anyway.

Thats is the round it fires that does the damage. Most hollow point rounds will do immense damage to a skull. Even a normal round does not make the neat hole that online gamers may think. They will glance off bone and take different trajectories through the body in that a bullet may strike the collar bone and deflect downwards into the body.

As for the Walther PPK, was it not prone to jamming ? In the early 1970s, one jammed while a kidnap attempt was made on Princess Anne and it put the Met off automatics for years. I seem to remember when a British Tornado was shot down during the First Gulf War, the PPK carried by them jammed when Iraqi troops seized it and went to fire it in the air.

True if they're wearing BA or on drugs. I guess though it's a combination of sitution, distance, enviroment, reaction time, status of target, and your aim and where your first hit makes contact.
