And there was me thinking it was how you drive.

It is, to an extent. Although the final crunch comes down to the opinion of the examiner.

You can do everything right, and still fail. You can make some pretty dumb mistakes, and sail through.

The best proof of this is the volume of boy racers around. No doubt some of them can, but choose not to, drive. The vast majority of them are terrible and must have bribed the examiner in order to pass.

The thing about driving is that there are many shades of grey. In an exam, its just black and white. They tend to err on the side of caution, and annoying as it is (second timer here) - you'll understand why.
