Lovely engine, but a couple of points spring to mind.

1. The turbo seems excessively large (and therefore laggy) for 'only' 400bhp. That turbo looks big enough to produce 600+.

2. How the hell is that going to fit in the car? The turbo will be sitting in a wheel well.............

Poor car choice to upgrade like that and like others have said putting that much power through a FWD drivetrain is silly. Want to do monster burnouts off the mark almost every time you put your foot down when moving off then fine, otherwise no need lol. If he has more money than sense then that is a different matter I guess....

I would love it in say a genuine 1300XL Mk1 but not in a FWD Eccy.
Tweaked cars should always be RWD for maximun fun factor. Getting of the line quick and Major Driftage is fun, clinging on to a bouncing torque steering nightmare is not fun.
Nice lump though.

400+bhp on the front wheels  210bhp on a non torqy Prelude was bad enough. Still at least hes doing engine rather than a body kit like most Escorts.

This (click for details & pics) 2lt Zetec Turbo had between 225bhp & 300bhp, with the ability to dial in power from the cockpit.

And this (click for details & pics) 2lt Zetec Turbo had over 400bhp, but I can't find the link with the dyno plot.

This does look like an unbeleivably crazy design.

The turbo looks ridiculously big. However I dont think that turbo is as big as the picture is making out. Perspective and all. Anyone remember the camer spider?

Only thing is, I didn't think you had all that much room in an escort to fit an engine, then a turbo sticking about a foot away from it.

I'm a bit of a newbie to engines :) Where does the air get sucked in? Im assuming through the turbine but I can't see how a filter will be put onto it, or doesnt it?

Looks nice anyway :D
Air goes in where you can see the vanes of the turbo. Gets forced out on the bit that has a cap on.

So air enters through the big funnel at the front.
The turbo is spun up exhaust coming up the pipe saying "turbonetics" ?

Thanks

No - air goes in the front 'funnel' and out the pipe saying 'turbonetics' (usually to an intercooler then the intake plenum), through the squeezy/bangy bit of the engine, out the exhaust manifold, into the back of the turbo (same as the 'turbonetics' pipe ;)) and out the back 'funnel'.

Ideally, the exhaust consists of nothing more than a completely straight full-bore length of pipe exiting from the nearest body panel.

A turbo sucks and blows....

So the exhaust gases start the turbo spinning and then when it winds up - It sucks air through the front and forces it down the inlet etc...at the same time it sucks air out of the engine etc... via the exhaust manifold...

(I think) - lol

The exhaust gases from the engine drive the turbine wheel which is attached to a shaft.

On the other end of the shaft is the compressor wheel which sucks air in and forces it into the intake.

That thing is going in a mid eighties FWD motor??. Seems silly to me, that will be practically un-usable in a FWD (sure it will move, but what's the point in having 400 bhp in something that will break traction as soon as you tap the pedal), would have been much better off in something capable of handling the power.

I got confused by the four pipes. I have one more question though :o

Where does the air filter go?

On the 'funnl' you're looking at...

...Or at the end of a length of tubing attached to that hole.

The only design consideration is if the snail has a split input...In which case you'd split the fannymould ensuring that the pulses arrive sequentially.

the 3sgte has this twin entry design, i want to stab the people that call it "twin turbo"

2.2 prelude's not *that* gutless :p

but yeah, 400hp in a FWD? arms like popeye :o

Prob be able to keep up with that in my 300hp celica :|
