Is anyone in their last year of Uni and starting to apply for Graduate Jobs? I'm looking at IT jobs and originally was going to apply for 5 or 6 but the deadlines are rapidly approaching and i'm getting stuck on all the application form questions :(

So far I'm applying for IBM and Transport for London, maybe a few others.

Once you get passed your Name and Address they arn't to hard. Equally unless your an outstanding grad you will need to apply to more than 5 or 6 to get a job. Try 20-30 at least. Work your way down the Times top 100 employers list and then some :)

Surely it depends on the area of IT your in though? Id of thought getting into support style roles would be pretty hard if all you've got is a vanilla 'IT/Computing' degree? But what if you're in a specialised subject like micro controllers/hardware architecture? Infact that should be harder as you have less places to apply! DAMN YOU 1712 LOGIC MACHINE!!!

The number of grad places to the number of applicants is a ratio in the wrong direction..Getting a job after uni is hard core. Grad jobs even in IT will be up against numerate diciplines maths/physics, specially with the companies like IBM. Add a few PHD grads and it makes the competition even tighter.

I konw I am in the boat where I am applying and when the process is so difficult and long it makes it worse applying for 20 jobs.

Work your way down the list starting at number one. Don't limit yourself to your current degree, worlds your oyster.

If you can do a masters in your field as this ones up more opportunities and deffo more starting money. Basically it cuts out a whole heap of training the company would have to give you..giving you a big head start (as you are already up on subjects), and saving them a lot of money.

This maybe slightly off topic, but how many of you guys have done placements?

I am currently in my 2nd year and in the position of applying for placements but I'm not too sure whether they will be of that much benefit. I'm in two minds as to whether to do one knowing full well that it is still possible to get a graduate job at the end of my 3rd year, but also whether if i do a placement and I don't enjoy it I am going to be stuck doing something I don't like for close to a year with no real benefit.

Just to let you know its not all gloom and doom. I applied for 3 graduate positions. The first turned me down, the second turned me down after an interview and the third I got, and the one I got was the one I wanted. I wouldn't even say I am an outstanding graduate, only got a 2:2 and working outside of my degree subject.

I've recently started a graduate programme. I applied to approx. 40 different companies, got offers from 3 of them. For my job, there were 2,000 people applying for just 10 jobs.

If you need any advice on application procedure or interview tips, just ask. The procedure is long and tedious, and that's exactly the point. Only those people truely interested in the company/role will spend the time filling it out with care.

Well, I'm into Civil Engineering with Architecture and have decided to leave applications till xmas hols...maybe not a good idea after all. I have been attending career fars/evenings etc but maybe I ought to check deadlines and make sure I won't be late.

Tbh, although I am a bit fed up with the civil engineering side of things at the mo, it's gonna tie me down to a 3-4 year training scheme to get accreditation and i am not even sure i want to become a proper civil engineer. Structural engineer is worse, the exam pass rate (following 5-10 years work) is still about 25%!!

I am not sure what else to go for. I am considering diverting to architecture/urban design but that is still more years to study. Or even something totally random but then I don't understand what I would have to offer to those "other" companies.

Hmmm... :(
