My school didn't have them at the point I was there, but if they did, I probably wouldn't have gone. I missed many school parties and didn't regret it whatsoever.
I also don't believe myself to be the boring sort. The people were not generally the sort of people I wanted to socialise with in my own time. I am grateful I stepped out of the school walls to find people who were broader in life experience and challenged me, and allowed me to think outside living my whole existance in that town. I think those who I went to school with have led far more 'boring' lives than I have since then.
To many people, high schools stifle an individual's ability for growth and creativity and that was my experience, I am glad for you that yours was different.
