Seriously though when did this become the norm in the UK? It used to be a mainly American thing, I certainly hadn't heard of it happening over here when I was at school.

I also don't believe myself to be the boring sort. The people were not generally the sort of people I wanted to socialise with in my own time. I am grateful I stepped out of the school walls to find people who were broader in life experience and challenged me, and allowed me to think outside living my whole existance in that town. I think those who I went to school with have led far more 'boring' lives than I have since then.

To many people, high schools stifle an individual's ability for growth and creativity and that was my experience, I am glad for you that yours was different.

Obviously, if you have no friends at your school, it is probably a good idea not to go. However that doesn't apply to those who are simply annoyed about the costs.

Neither had I. At least its one good American thing we took. It is a kickass night out. Not 'good' or 'quite fun'.

It wasn't my judgement, it was yours. If you don't want to socialise with people from your school in your own time, it is fair to assume they aren't friends.

I never bothered with my university end-of-year prom type thingy.

I've never really been the kind of person to go to that kind of thing, plus none of my friends bothered going either. It wouldn't have been much fun sitting there alone.

So I did what a true geek would... and went to a 10-man LAN party with all the aforementioned friends. And it was a total blast.

I certainly don't regret not going.

I didnt go to the freshers ball at Uni... regret that, even though its more of a party than a ball.

Went to school prom, it was No swearing!... but memories wise you have to

It isn't much really. It is the last time you are gonna see all your friends. The girls will spend much more on sexy clothes so it is worth it for that.

I was on Holiday in Portugal watching football during mine.

Got an end of year prom at my college that i'll definitely go to, the year 11 prom at my secondary was school was pretty tacky but a great laugh. And yes, go for all the hot girls in sexy dresses, seriously worth it, even if you've got a date/girlfriend or whatever
