I live in Birmingham and have not seen any referance to "Winterval" lights, or indeed any other "Winterval" festivities.
It was however all over the radio that the "Christmas" lights were being turned on a few days ago.
For anyone who is interested in some actual facts regarding "Winterval" please read on:
About 10 years ago an unusual winter calendar of festivities meant that we had Diwali, Eid, Hannuka and Christmas all falling within a few weeks of each other. Birmingham City Council decided that because all 4 major religeous groups were celebrating at the same time it would be a good idea to call the combined celebration "Winterval" as the lights and other attractions were just as appropriate to one as to another (Diwali = festival of light for example).
When put across like that it sounds a fairly reasonable idea doesn't it?
Then the press got hold of it: healines that read "Christmas Cancelled" appeared all over the local and national press.
Birmingham Council learned it's lesson 10 years ago, and to my knowledge this has never been repeated yet every chuffing year some bozo who works for the press hasn't earned himself a story and has to resurrect this tripe from the bottom of his trough.
The Christmas lights in Brum look very nice, thank you. So do the Christmas trees, and the Christmas decorations that adorn lamposts in some of the more Asian/Muslim dominated areas of the city.
