Hi, we have been straining our brains with my son's christmas school quiz and are left with the tricky questions (for us!) so I could do with a bit of help please!!
Here are 3 questions to get you going:

Add the missing terms in these sequences ( The question marks indicate where the gaps are)

a) HC, IP, 2P, 3OAK, S, F, FH, 4OAK, ?, ?

b) ?, G, B, B, ?, B

c) 4-20, 16-27, 9-30, 12-16, ?, ?

All help gratefully received so see what you can do!!

Cheers, PeterT.

c) is some kind of alternating pattern, ?s should be 16-40 (following on from 4-20 and 9-30) and 8-7 (16-27 = 4*4-3*9, 12-16 = 3*4-2*8, 8-7 = 2*4-1*7) i.e. actual hyphen separators and not minus signs

Makes sense to me, anyway :o

Lots of replies and well done for giving some good answers.

I am still baffled about the poker, please could you explain it out to me.

Regarding the age of the child, the quiiz is for the parents to have a go at when you are sick of watching the telly or talking to the mother in law.

Here are another couple of questions to have a go at:

How did the following pop groups come by their names?

a) Take That

b) Frankie goes to Hollywood

Taken from http://www.amiright.com/names/origins/t.shtml

a)"They didn't know how to name the band so one day they saw a magazine with "Madonna" on the cover and the title said "Madonna: Take That & Party" so they thought it was cool "Take that & Party", then they found out there was a rapper named "The party", so they cut it to Take That....(And that's why their first album's name was "Take That & Party")"

Quoted from Wikipedia (so might want to check elsewhere for reassurence)

b) "On the B-side to the group's first single, Johnson explained that the group's name derived from a page from the New Yorker magazine, featuring the headline "Frankie Goes To Hollywood" and a picture of Frank Sinatra. "

EDIT: on that band names origin site, it says that for b) it is Frankie Vaughn and not Frank Sinatra!! Who to believe? Dunno.

Excellent answers and thank you for explaining the poker. As you can see I am not a gambling man!!

Very Well Spotted. How the hell are kids meant to know the answer relating to Poker? How old is your son? Bizarre.

maybe the teachers wants to know how supportive parents are these days.. and how often they gamble and go to pubs.

Not sure about that, but I think your on the right lines. I think the sequence is 16-42, then 8-7.

My reckoning is that the sequence is (2*2 - 4*5), (4*4-3*9), (3*3-5*6), (4*3-2*8) so the next two will be (4*4-6*7) and (4*2-1*7)

I recognised a pattern as I usually do with such things, but I never thought about it mathematically. I came up with:

4-20, 16-27, 9-30, 12-16, 16-42, 8-7, 25-56, 4-0, 36-62, 0+5

Does that agree with your working out?

I take it you mean 72 (8*9) not 62 ;)
4-20, 16-27, 9-30, 12-16, 16-42, 8-7, 25-56, 4-0, 36-72, 0+5 works,

However, it may be hyphens betwen the numbers rather than negative/positive signs so it may also be:
4-20, 16-27, 9-30, 12-16, 16-42, 8-7, 25-56, 4-0, 36-72, 0-5 :)
