Wow, can some of you guys with the big lenses take some time exposures of the moonless night sky (say centered on Orion Nebula) for comparison?

just to show the light-gathering ability

Just looked at the EXIF of both of Busterboy's pictures and those images where shot with a Canon EOS-1D Mark II. :eek:

Go on show us the Canon EOS-1D Mark II with the Super tele on.

That's huge. Wouldn't like to be carrying anything bigger than that lens all day round with me.

Super Telephoto primes are used with a Monopod - It's impossible to hand hold a 400 (F2.8), 500 or 600mm lens for more than a few mins.

This is a 500mm F4 (taken using a 1Ds MKII and 85mm F1.2 MKII)

so if that is a 350D the effective focal length would be 1334mm :eek:

or have i got my multipliers and factors all wrong.

suprised a picture of Zeiss's 1700mm behemoth(sp) hasnt been posted.
At 256Kg, i reckon you dont get a tripod, you get a Hummer H1.

I love that 300mm 2.8L although I think a more sensible option (in terms on the bank balance) would be the 300mm F4 L

I did the math for that pic a while back, something like 1388mm or something with the extension tubes.

2400mm if you used the 2x with the 1200mm.. Im not sure it would be too happy with the 1.4x aswel the aperture will be far too small.

I saw a picture of a girl photographer with two 70-200 F2.8 IS L, a large Canon super telephoto prime and the 100-400 L all attached to bodies and hung round her neck :eek:
