any ideas anyone??? plsssssssssssssssssssssssss

thanks in advance..

Go to a command prompt and run:

sfc /SCANNOW

This will check all the OS files and make sure they are not corrupt. You'll need the XP disc in case any files need replacing.

korbk thanks for that, thats really handy...

although I must say I am just inclined to copy and paste the shell32.dll file from the xp cd...that will be ok would it not? or would you say I should do a sfc /SCANNOW to check all other files are OK???

thanks for all the responses recieved..

If you believe that only that one file is the cause of the problem, then by all means copy it from the CD. There's a possiblity, though, that there are other files affected, so running SFC would be preferable, in my opinion.

Good luck.

I Typed : sfc/scannow and recieve a msg" pls wait whilst windows verifies all protected files....then it just stops....hmm...

any ideas how to proceed without reformating, as reformating is not an option?

pls confirm

thanks in advance
