I doubt I will be overclocking it any time soon...

I'll be dual-booting between Windows (for games) and Linux.

id dump the raptor and get a second wd drive running in raid 0 you could still get a 2nd bacup drive too with the money saved and with the change get the crucual ballistix ram as its amazing at the new price tag

I'd also dump the Raptor as paul_64l says but I'd also change the existing Western Digital there to an AAKS drive which is faster and uses perpendicular recording technology.

Changing the Ram is not a bad idea as I believe the chips used are Micron although I'm not certain on that.

Finally if you are thinking about overclocking I'd buy an aftermarket heatsink, any of the following is a good choice - Noctua NH-U12F, Scythe Ninja or Tuniq Tower. :)

I've had bad experiences with Raid, so I'll be putting the Windows partition on the Raptor, and Kubuntu on the Caviar.

I went for the GeIL as it had reviews from buyers on OC. Is the Ballistix much better? I assume you are talking about Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-6400C4 800MHz Dual Channel Kit (BL2KIT12864AA804) ?

AAKS drive? Not heard of those before (I feel I'm a bit behind now...) Which one would you recommend?

Which of those heatsinks is the quietest?

OcUK just sell the 320gb model and a 500gb model, they are on a par speedwise with a Seagate 7200.10 but in some cases even quieter.

The Scythe Ninja can be run fanless if you aren't overclocking much but any of them is very quiet indeed.

Finally yep that is the Ram, the reason I think it may use Micron D9 chips is because of this page. :)

Cheers. I'll change the Caviar to the AAKS model, and memory over to the Crucial.

I will take a look at the CPU coolers as well.

I'll second the ninja.. its a gooc cooler and will overclock well but will run fanless when not overclock as semi said above.... also the fan on the cooler is a low speed so it is silent with the fan on

I just read http://tomshardware.co.uk/2007/03/12/cheap_raid_ravages_wd_raptor_uk/

I think I will take the risk and go for Raid 0 on 2 x AAKS WD HDD, and use the 3rd HDD for Linux

I hope I won't run into compatibility issue with RAID and the Kubuntu...

The WD ....AAKS range of SATA HDDs are excellent, I have the 500GB, and the Average read in HDTach, is around 7MB/s faster that my 74GB (8MB cache) Raptors, have just ordered a 2nd one, I also found that the AAKS HDDs are also faster (Average read) than the Seagate 7200.10 range, by 5-6MB/s (HDTach). :)
