D200 pictures remaining

When I insert an empty 1GB memory card into my D200 it states 55 pictures remaining (compressed RAW + basic jpeg). However, I always manage to get well over 100 pics on the card.

Any ideas anyone? Thanks

The number of pictures remaining are just an estimate, the file sizes are always different, depending on how much data the photo records.

I got a bit confused with my new 2GB card.

With my 1GB card it says I can store 120 RAW files. With this 2GB I can store 270  just doesn't seem to add up, but I'm not complaining.

I recall my D70 used to under read before it got it's firmware upgrade (though only in RAW or only in Jpeg, I don't remember) maybe the D200 has a similar problem? :/
Could be. I just checked Nikon's site for a firmware upgrade and it appears I have the latest version (2.0) already.

It might still be thinking I've got it set to uncompressed RAW? Yeah that seems to be it, as when I change from compressed to uncompressed the remaining images does not change.
