Hi I have a problem with my computer, although I'm not quite sure what is causing the problem.

My computer will turn itself off and when it restarts, it says previous shutdown due to thermal event. I'm pretty sure the fans are working and I've tried leaving the case open and using it, but it still occurs. Any ideas?

Thanks
Andy

Best bet would be to get some thermal paste, then reseat your heatsink, removing all old thermal paste before applying a thin layer of the new stuff, hopefully this will help

Is it a Dell ?

We've had loads of Dells at work with the same problem due to burst capacitors on the motherboard.

Have a look at the motherboard and if any of the capacitors are bulging at the top or leaking brown stuff give Dell a call & they should replace the motherboard as it's a manufacturing fault.

We've been told at work that the motherboard replacement policy is valid for 5 years from the date of purchase of the system or January 31, 2008, whichever occurs first. I assume it's the same for home users.
