ok, this may sound a bit weird. i reinstalled my windows and then tried to install steam. when the window "updating steam" appears, then the cpu is at 100% and nothing happens. however, this only happens when i connect to the internet via wireless connection. (zyxel card, linksys access point). if i plug the pc into the linksys, then everything works fine. internet etc works fine wireless.
since it is a fresh install i have
no firewall (only xp firewall)
no antivir
no other programs
all ports open

i have a new motherboard and cpu (asus a8n32sli, amd) and i think this might have something to do with it, since it used to work fine in my old system.
i know there's a steam forum, but they don't let you post after registering???
so any help very appreciated

I had a similar problem (I'm not wireless).

It seems to be with Asus motherboard, I think it is to do with the onboard ethernet firewall or something - you can disable it, by removing the drivers and reinstalling them, without installing the firewall driver this time.

Thats no too accurate since I cannot remeber exactly how I sorted it, but search on google their are few threads around with this net problems Asus mobo's and steam.
