I'm having unusual problems when copying files from HD to HD

Maxtor 120GB SATA 7200 SATA1 x2
Western Digital 320GB SATA2 3200KS x1
Western Digital 250GB SATA2 2500KS x1
Western Digital 80GB PATA 7200 x1

Copying from Maxtor to the 320GB or 250GB, or Maxtor to 80GB is fine.
But when I copy files from the 80GB to the 320GB or 250GB my PC goes really slow, mouse stops responding and locking up. It's doing this in XP and Vista.

I know the 80GB works because I've had a OS on it for a while and had no problems.

Event logger is showing these errors

A parity error was detected on \Device\Ide\IdePort1.
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3\D.
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation.

80GB is secondary master. Pioneer 11 is primary master. Pioneer 107 is secondary slave.

Sounds like you might possibly have a problem with one of your disks.

Try running chkdsk on all your drives in turn. E.g. open a command prompt, and enter:

chkdsk c: /f

It might want to do that at boot-time, if so, let it. Replace C: with the drive letters of your drives as appropriate.

This really doesn't make sense. I disconnected 80GB. 111 is primary master, 107 is secondary master.

Copying files from 111 to 320GB is fine, but attempt to read in from 107 at the same time and mouse starts lagging/OS halts.

So it's not the 80GB.
No I'm going to disconnect the 107 and see what happens. If transferring files from/to 80GB is ok then 107 is causing problems. But if it's still doing it then either cable or motherboard controller. I think??

I'll try installing from 107 only also. edit right as soon as I did 107 to 320Gb read it crashed. I'll try another cable, if it still crashes then 107 at fault.

So I'll disconnect 107 and try 80GB. If that works then 107 is faulty. If it still crashes then something else, cable or ide controller.

Was the D partition on the 80GB drive?
Maybe the problem is on the drive that has the pagefile?

No fresh installs, partition is now on raid 120GB

Copying from 320GB to 80GB is fine.
But copying from 111 to 320GB at the same time halts it. Now I'm really confused.
107 disconnected. 80GB configured as secondary master.

Right gone back to non RAID, going to test 250 & 320GB. Apparently 320GB was getting errors, which is a bit daft as fine last week. I think RAID is messing it up for non raid drives. Apparently 20K of bad sectors on the 320GB, but just checked 250GB and that has 20KMoving data now and going to do full format for both. Bit of a coiencidence the exact number of bad sectors.

Ok Windows XP Pro, non raid installed on the 120GB. Other 120GB, 320 and 250GB connected, moving files back and forth for the last few hours and been fine. Copied files to the 80GB fine.

So going to try out the two optical drives again tomorrow. If it works ok then RAID problem.
