Do you really need Vista Ultimate? If you don't get Home Premium - that should save you a significant sum.

Also I'd swap the DVD drive from the ASUS - Samsung SH-S183ABEBN - its a few pounds cheaper and a fantastic drive.

Well you could save a bit maybe get the
lian li pc 7+ II atx case £58
Also that mouse seems rather expensive how about a £16 microsoft intellipoint 3.0 this would give you the extra needed for a 640mb card.
And fan controller is not really needed bit of a gimmick saving a further £38.
Having said all of this you are getting a 19" monitor which a 640mb card will be overkill for the 640mb cards only come into their own really at resolutions of 1600 & above.

This isn't a money saving tip as the two above would save you the money you need. You could get a E6600 and clock it to E6750 speeds anyway. I know the 6750 has the 1333mhz FSB but it's easier to OC RAM with the 6600 due to the multipliers and fsbs involved.

But anyway you should really get the Western Digital Caviar 16MB AAKS 500GB. It's almost as fast as a Raptor :)

Thanks for the responses.

shine, I probs will get Vista Home Premium for now, but the Samsung drive seems to be the same price as the Asus one. Which one's better, do you reckon?

C64, thanks for the tips, I'll definately look in to the mouse and drop the fan controller... I'll edit it in a minute.

Darg, that looks like a great idea, but would the E6550 be cheaper? I'm not too sure about processors, the PC will be used from everything from gaming to Web design to image editing and music listening.

Thumbs up to the Western Digital Caviar 16MB AAKS 500GB. :D

EDIT: I would like to know what you think of a BFG pre-overclocked card? Is it worth the extra cash for it to come pre-OCed with a warranty?

Also will any extra cooling need to be added to the Nine Hundred?

Cheers.

The 6600 is £20 more......... why would you want to buy a 6600....

Nothing hard about OC'ing the 6750...... albeit may not as easy, but it's far from being hard.

Nice - just caught your spec in your sig. I probs need a 20/21in monitor then to get the most out of the 640MB graphics card?

Samsung it is then!

EDIT: I suppose a 640MB card would get be great frame rates in games on a 19in monitor? Cheers.

Wow I just assumed the 6600 would be cheaper. That'll teach me to actually check prices next time.

When buying a monitor consider that the monitor will outlast your new rig so you should buy with the future in mind. I'd look to get as big a screen as you can afford - if that means you need to wait and save some more money for the monitor then do that.

OK, this is where I am now:

Antec Nine Hundred Case £70.50
OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 PSU £59.00
Abit IP35 Motherboard £88.00
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB 5000AAKS 16MB Hard drive £70.00
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NQ PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 RAM (DDR) £64.50
Core2Duo (E6750) Processor £122.00
Leadtek GF 640MB GTS Grapics card £232.50
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 OEM Sound card £16.00
Samsung SH-S183ABEBN 1 optical drive £21.00
Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound Cooling solution £7.00

Microsoft Intellipoint mouse £23.50
Saitek Eclipse 2 Illuminated Keyboard - Blue/Red/Purple £32
Vista Home Premium OEM £70.50
19in monitor £176

I'm not sure about the £211.50 monitor, I suppose I'd have to sacrifice other parts to get it? Unless there is a 20/21in monitor that's just as good for less?

Thanks.

Other than that I think the spec looks OK? :D

Do you think it's better if I overclock another processor with a 4mb cache?

Well if your overclocking save urself a bit of money and get a E2160 which will OC comfotably to 2.8GHz and further, the extra cache doesnt make that much difference in games.

That mouse you have the one i meant is the older version which is £12-£16 most places it's grey and white and just as good had mine since about 2002
so you have to say it's quite superb to last this long and still be great
and i game a lot ! but the new version is bound to be great also.
I personally have always bought microsoft 500 keyboards they are dirt cheap
and last long but maybe you need illuminated keys and all that i don't know
but i personally would never spend over £10 for a keyboard.

EDIT: I would like to know what you think of a BFG pre-overclocked card? Is it worth the extra cash for it to come pre-OCed with a warranty?
No way they are pretty much all the same cards with the exact same cooling
and the non OC ones will clock to the same levels as the pre OC ones
they are just bios flashed to different clocks.

I WOULD SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THE LIAN LI PC 7+II
as an alternate cheaper yet higher quality case to the antec
look at my signature i am running all this nice and cool
in an akasa eclipse with just 2 x120mm fans my current idle is 25c @3.2 ghz
the antec 900 is more for sli setups imo as most rigs will not benefit
in any way apart from a couple c temp drops.
