    *** Apple Let Loose Event - May 7th, 2024 @ 15:00 BST ***

Wife has asked for one for her bday, 18th. Hoping the new ones are out and delivered before then. Otherwise I’m sure she’ll understand if it’s a few days late.

Finally home… sodium levels good. Put on 225 grams in 48 hours. God I hate being in hospitals. The relief of being in your own home with your family. Priceless.

Bit of a palaver last 24 hours. Our son was born with forceps. They said he’s very likely to be jaundiced because of this and that it’ll peak at around day 5. Well yesterday was day 5 we took him to the day 5 midwife appointment. She did the skin test for jaundice and she said based on this...

Fears Sadiq Khan will bring in pay-per-mile road taxes after spending £3m on project

Insurance no claims should be mileage based too. So you’ve held a license for 5 years but averages 1000 miles a year compared to someone who’s driven 20k+ a year without an accident which is the lower risk? Years is just arbitrary IMO.

    OcUK Dadsnet thread

I’m loving it. Went with the midwife to do his assessment and already learned loads watching her dress and undress him. Never thought I’d be capable of loving something as much as my boy. I’ve felt so many powerful emotions in the last 36 hours. I feel so alive and happy.

    OcUK Dadsnet thread

Well I’ve joined the club. Our son was born Wednesday 10th April at 1:50am, at 38 weeks, 7lbs 9ozs. I’m in love, he’s perfect, my wife is amazing, labour is so brutal. She had to be cut and little one delivered with forceps. Then had to have surgery after to manually extract the placenta which...

Boarding a loft - couple of questions.

I’ve got 3x2 loft joists (1950s build), spaced ~360mm centres. Used the 100mm loft legs and boarded over with 22mm chipboards and put insulation. Takes my weight fine and I’m a big chub chub (100kg+). No cracked ceilings.

    Strongest plasterboard fixing?

Really struggling to see how you can't hit at least one stud? Unless the bookshelf is less than the width of your stud spacing and there is a very specific spot you want it to be which is in between the studs. Surely you can get at least one of the brackets to hit a stud? I'd feel much happier...

What handheld vacuum cleaners are everybody using?

Just bought a Halo X Capsule. Bagged cordless, bagless are so annoying having to clean the filter. Very happy with it.

    Emergency Savings

Our mortgage + bills comes to £2200 a month (that's all food, elec/gas, council, water). We keep £15k in an easy access as an emergency fund. We have more in ISAs but obviously don't want to take stuff out of there. We could be more frugal with our food spend too if I were made redundant so I...

Spec me - Phillips screwdriver set

I can recommend Wera screwdrivers. However might I ask, do you have any power tools that use bits? Such as an impact driver or electric screwdriver (or even a drill that you use for inserting fixings?). If so it might be more prudent to get a bit holder and just buy some Philips bits, that way...

    Over-rated / terrible movies?

The Godfather films. Grade A 'meh' from me and I like those style of films. My favourite films are: True Romance + LA Confidential + The Prestige

How Easy Is It To Sell an Old Piano These Days?

I play and have an upright. And I know a bit about these older pianos, I have a new upright but was seriously considering an old restored one and I did a tonne of research. Your mums experience is typical of an old upright similar age as the one OP has. The wrest plank (the piece of wood that...

How Easy Is It To Sell an Old Piano These Days?

They’re called sconces, they’re not very popular and when these age of pianos are restored they’ll often be removed. Those and it being 85 keys (as opposed to 88) means it’ll be late 19th or early 20th century. From looking on some forums it sounds like they were London made and given a German...

    The increasing incompetence of companies

How many incompetent ******* does it take to change a lightbulb? Not really related but feel your pain. At work they have some fancy pants lighting system where all of the lights are powered by PoE. Since moving in to the new office 3 years ago there has been constant problems and it takes ages...

So, this post office palaver then

I wonder if they had some sort of training interface where they could make what they thought were Mickey Mouse transactions but it was actually happening to real systems.
