The Icemat (Black) - 2nd Edition doesn't work at all with the Microsoft HABU mouse. Anything other than very slow movement on this surface will cause the mouse to skip. However I'd place the blame squarely on the mouse judging by what I've read on the net.

Norton Utilities will also destroy any data left in 'free space' on your HD. Re-partitioning and re-formatting will only destroy the FAT and TOC. The actual data is still reclaimable with the right tools.
