Project Zomboid also has controller support and splitscreen coop. Bit more of an in-depth isometric survival sim. Quite challenging but you can play with the difficulty to tailor it to you.

You can get some planks by chopping down doors or get the axe and saw and go crazy on the trees. Chop em, get logs, saw em get planks :) As for the beginner mode I haven't tried it myself. I always go to the custom sandbox. From what I gather though, the zombie population will increase...
