What now for VMWare? What now for virtualisation?

One upside of the Broadcom acquisition? Smelling blood in the water, their competitors' marketing budgets have gone ballistic. Lots of free lunches etc going now for anyone prepared to look at products for a day.

What now for VMWare? What now for virtualisation?

Indeed, virtually all of PowershellCLI advanced functionality was developed by people not employed by VMware, or who were offered a job there to do it after their unpaid contributions. I'm sure that Broadcom will make out of this in the short term, but I think we'll see a gradual decline in...

    New NUC for home lab

It's silent. Temps absolutely fine, especially given nobody is likely to hold all day hour gaming sessions on it. So good I bought one for my young boy to do home lessons and play Minecraft on.

With the recent ASUS antics, wise to buy another brand?

Asus are fine. Until they're not and you need support. Their recent behaviour was unforgivable. I went with ASRock. I found a small BIOS bug and raised a support call which was answered, diagnosed within 24 hours and a new BIOS was released soon after. Excellent support and board has been 100%...

    New NUC for home lab

I have a licence for ESX8 - given I've only just upgraded from 6.7 it'll be along time before I need a different hypervisor. My employer will likely be skilling us all up on HyperV so that's probably what I'll use when the time arrives.

What now for VMWare? What now for virtualisation?

Tenfold increase? That's insane. Assume you went all in on cores/CPU if you had a RAM based agreement? How many CPU/cores does that cover?

What now for VMWare? What now for virtualisation?

Broadcom have come in with the heavy upheaval stick - it's complete chaos - we were due to renew end January and still can't get a proper quote out of them and this is a common scenario apparently. I can't see it ending well for them. Yes inertia will keep big enterprise with them initially...

    ESXI AVAILABILITY UPDATE

I expect that my work will be transitioning to Hyper-V given its cheap if you already have a corporate agreement. The only thing keeping us with VMware was reasonable licence costs and sunk cost in experience/scripts etc. Shame, we've been with VMware since ESX2.5.

    ESXI AVAILABILITY UPDATE

Got my free ESX8 key just before they were withdrawn. Given I'm only just upgrading now from 6.7 in my home setup, that'll last me a good while....

    New NUC for home lab

I run 4 VMs for my home network, a bastion server for remote access, NGINX reverse proxy, HomeAssistant and a DNS/DHCP server. I've been running ESX6.7 for years and thought it time to update and upgrade at the same time. With ESX now bundling drivers into ESX8 and Intel out of the market I...

    Dan C4-SFX

I'm using 4 x Arctic P14 PWM PST - two for GPU intake, two for the side mounted rad. Got speeds set up to they're almost silent unless I'm really punishing the system with a AAA game and thats more to keep motherboard cool than CPU/GPU

    *** Official SONOS Thread ***

Any streaming device without a proper remote is dead to me. I already hate using my phone for the Sonos and only use it on tablet - I definitely don't want to have to wake up my phone and use an app just to pause/change/search TV

A trip to the dentist, NHS where art thou

Erm, that's almost exactly how it works now. GPs and Dentists are private businesses, paid by the Govt/NHS for treatment they provide.

A trip to the dentist, NHS where art thou

The dentists can make way more money private even without those dental insurance plans they're fond of pushing on you. Until the government increases the tariff payments they make to the dentist for your treatment and trains more dentists, it won't improve.

    Anyone into knives?

It's always a trade off between "easy to sharpen" and "keeps an edge". If you're not confident sharpening, get one of the latter (harder steel) and have it done for you. I have an Enzo - both a folding EDC and a lock knife for camping etc...
