    Nikon D7100 or Canon 7D?

    £930 atm if you use code DSLRCS5 @ Curry's.;)

So this video was made by a third year student at my uni..

Quite impressed. (I find the sloping horizon a tad off-putting though)

Considering 1st purchase of a Nikon dlsr

Negligible imho. After all it's the person using the camera that makes the difference........with good glass of course. tbh, it becomes more hassle with just the 1 scroll wheel & having to press buttons or delve into menus when you need to change settings quickly. Also, Auto or P mode is...

Considering 1st purchase of a Nikon dlsr

Out of those, I'd say the D7000. Just having the extra scroll wheel makes a heck of a difference in use.

    Nikon D7000

Yes, the D7000 is still a great camera, especially at £560 ish UK prices. The D7100 is still £830 though & tbh for most people, they won't see a big difference. (You could buy/import from outside the EU & save some money, but warranty issues & VAT/duty need consideration) D7000 with...

    Gimbal head selection.. which one

Nothing `bad`, but they aren't as flexible in use imo & tend to be rated for a bit less weight. The 393 (just like the others) won't block the camera. You mount your gear with the lens foot, not via the camera. http://www.nikonians.org/reviews?alias=manfrotto393-bogen3421-lens-support

    Gimbal head selection.. which one

Personally I'd avoid the side-mounting ones, any of the above will be fine though. There's also the Manfrotto 393 that's well within your price range. (around £125)

Telephoto bird tips and what I should expect

For fairly static birds 1/500th can be fast enough (depending how near/far you are & whether the wind is blowing on the feathers) but BIF obviously need a much faster SS (unless you have good panning skills & still want a touch of wing-blur) The bottom line is, 300mm is probably the absolute...

    local camera shops arrgghhhh

Most local camera shops can't stock everything (even the large multiples struggle sometimes) so if there's something I want I ring my local shop first to see if it's in stock & if it isn't & I'm in no desperate rush, they'll order it for me. The reason they're closing & `dying a death` is...

    Backbutton focussing

imho, it's a good thing to learn early on, rather than re-learning later, it really becomes second nature. I find it much easier to focus & re-compose before shooting.

    Gambia - Animals

Lovely images. Amazing just how camouflaged the nightjar actually is. Love the young red colobus with it's mother, but my fave is the alpha male chimp looking out from the palm fronds. Really good series.

The old 'will I have to pay import tax' question, and another one

ElDud, this will also be my last post on this thread (now the OP has purchased & is sorted) as I'm even more baffled by you & your lack of understanding at what I originally posted & also re warranties. As D.P. has pointed out, warranties vary, but as I said originally, selling grey-market...

The old 'will I have to pay import tax' question, and another one

Me obsessed? lol  (Post #9 where you jumped in & quoted me, out of context, as though my point wasn't valid) Glad you're sorted Alex. Enjoy. ;)

The old 'will I have to pay import tax' question, and another one

I said- "folk tend to pay a bit less for grey items & SOME dealers won't touch them." (in case the OP wasn't aware when/if he decided to re-sell, so he could factor in any possible differences) Again, I never mentioned warranties!

Not sure why you're quoting me, I never mentioned warranties.

The old 'will I have to pay import tax' question, and another one

Just about covered in the previous posts, but also consider ( you mentioned `Figuring I can sell it all on if I get poor`) that folk tend to pay a bit less for grey items & SOME dealers won't touch them.

    Nikon D5300, but what lens?

The 16-85mm is a good lens for general walk around & the 70-300mm is a belter for the money, for that `extra reach`.

    Aurora Storm

Brilliant images! You must have been well chuffed. Something I'm longing to see one day. (reports of sightings as far South as Essex & even Jersey for this last night)
