The Great OcUK Distro/Derivative Poll V - Get it while it's hot

I haven't had linux on my desktop for a while, and when I did have it before I used Suse. This time I've gone for Ubuntu and I'm very impressed. I haven't had any problems at all, and the amount of information/help available is outstanding. :D

    Laptop choice

How did you get on with this 9400? I'm waiting on one arriving next week. Got the T2400 version with 2Gb RAM, and the 7800Go. I can't wait to give it a blast.

Why the hell doesn't VIVO work (7800GT)?

I've got a different card, but on mine I had to install more than just the drivers to get VIVO. There was video capture software on the driver disk.

What's the max resolution of your monitor?

1280x1024 on a new VX912 with a 7800GT Extreme. I've just changed from my trusty 19" LG CRT but I never gamed above that resolution anyway as I only just changed my graphics card from a 9800 Pro.

    Looking to upgrade?

There's nothing wrong with his machine specs except the graphics card. 1Gb will be fine for now. 2Gb would help in some games but 1Gb isn't going to hold him back.

X1900series owners or very soon to be owners

I'd agree. I ordered a gfx card and hard drive at 4:15pm once, and got them at 11:30am the next day!! I couldn't believe it :D

    full sweep or?

Don't know what price you'd get for your motherboard and you'd be better keeping your chip if you're staying with socket 754. I got £70 for my 9800 Pro if that helps. That was all a bonus as far as I was concerned though. A new worthwhile upgrade on an AGP card was the same price as a new board...

    full sweep or?

I had the same system as the OP, and found there simply wasn't a AGP card worth upgrading to. For the same price as a high end AGP solution I was able to buy an Epox 8npa S754 SLI board, and a 7800GT. Then I sold the motherboard and 9800 pro, making it a fairly cheap upgrade all things...

I'd think torrent is the obvious choice when so many people want to downlaod a file. I'll be firing up Azereus when I get home :D

Nice. I'm on the same set-up so that's a good indicator for me. :)

Graphics card arrived, but no CoD2?

That's odd. I got COD 2 with mine, same model. I didn't get any other games, just that.

    Opterons 165 & 170 < - Gibbo

It's pretested to 2.7GHz though. That's why they've bumped the price up.

Why? Surely it's meant to represent how a system performs in a gaming environment? The CPU is an important part of the set-up in a real-world game, so why not bench it?

7800GT Thread, post your mods and clocks here.

I tried the bios volt mod there, and it managed to reflash it no problem. However when I went into the control panel and set it to auto detect the new frequencies were lower than I got on the standard bios! It only detected 490 and 1.1 as opposed to 515/1.17 beforehand. I tried running...

    7800GT overclocking

Think I'll have a bash at the volt mod this evening. Coolbits detects my optimal frequencies as 510/1.17 with the stock cooler. It'll be interesting to see how high it'll go with the mod.

Any point buying a new GFX with DX10 round the corner

The same article I quoted from above said you need a dx9 card to run vista.

7800GT Thread, post your mods and clocks here.

I'm on an XFX LED edition. Coolbits detects my optimal frequencies as 510/1.17, and I get 7755 in 3d05 with that. I'm on stock cooling and haven't the guts to try the bios volt mod yet. I'm not sure I shouldn't be scoring a bit higher than that on 3d05 though. Maybe nearer 8000?
