Lower power CPU for Plex server

Update for anyone still following or that finds this thread: I managed to get an Asrock Z370 Extreme4 in a bundle then sold the other items so that I got the board for only £25 I also picked up an i3-8100 for £34 today When the CPU arrives I will take a day to do some testing. I intend to...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

I believe this calculation from Avalon was assuming 24/7 run time, but the later discussions in this thread (including further calculations from Avalon) centre around spin down.

Lower power CPU for Plex server

I fortunately already have a lifetime pass from when it was on sale a long time ago, but thanks for a clarificaiton that could have been a shock haha.

Lower power CPU for Plex server

I agree and I will give it some serious thought, but I don't take changing the OS on this system lightly. Also, yes it could save a lot of power in the long run, but it would also cost at least $90 upfront. As a bigger change it is something I will consider for the long term, especially when I...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Well thanks to my current setup using ZFS, when I upgrade my drives to the new 10TBs I'll have to completely backup all data, create a new array and transfer it back. So that might be a good point to shift to unraid since it is going to be a big task regardless. I do like the idea of using...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

This is interesting, but aren't there concerns about wear to the drive? If the drives have to regularly spin up and down again, the wear is greater than if they stay spinning? But I suppose it depends how long they have to idle before they spin down and how frequently that occurs in an average day?

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Yeah I was very reluctant to switch to TrueNas a while back, but after doing so have been very happy with it. For sure, cloud storage definitely is a viable option for many scenarios, but even if I wanted to I think I would be very limited by my upload speed as well. Maybe one day. That's a...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Just to add to the synology debate that is going, as well as being extremely pricey to a point that it defeats the purpose of trying to save money because it would take a lifetime of energy savings to earn that back, it is also not very powerful and impossible to customise. I like having my home...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

So Ironwolf/Exos drives are my intended drive to swap to, but I will also be expanding to get more storage space so there will still be 6/8 drives. I have debated unraid, but I am happy with my current setup using TrueNas. Maybe one day in the future, but not right now. So I have been...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Uhm, but how can I connect 8-10 drives to a Mac Mini? Surely that would involve a large external drive enclosure or seperate storage solution which kind of defeats the purpose...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Thanks for the detailed response! You raise a lot of great points that I have been pondering over... Sorry I forgot to state, I think the last time I checked my idle consumption was 110-120W, but I might double check that tonight and might also detach my pool and unplug the drives to see how...

Lower power CPU for Plex server

Hi all, have you seen energy prices?! I need to reduce my server power consumption and was thinking of swapping out my CPU/motherboard, see my specs below. I want to downgrade, but I still need something that can transcode if needed, so I was thinking minimum 4/6 cores, a pentium or a pi isn't...

Crash WHEA-logger event 18 when GPU driver installed

My nephew's PC I built for him has started crashing randomly, no BSOD, just hard reset. Event viewer shows WHEA-logger event 18 at the time of the crashes. Doesn't occur in safe mode and I narrowed it down to the GPU driver. When not installed the system iis fine, as soon as the adrenalin...

Freenas mount HDD to copy data from pool

Hi all! I'm currently giving my NAS a much needed upgrade and I am now thinking about how I should backup my ZFS pool. I'm obviously not a Freenas veteran, so please feel free to point out if this idea is foolish altogether, just be gentle with it ;) Basically my plan was to get a single...

*SOVLED* CIFS Mounted Drive Not Showing All Folders Ubuntu 18.04

*SOLVED* After some more digging I found the solution. I need to talk to IT about why this is, but it appears that the version had to be set to 1.0 rather than 3.0. I'm assuming that the server is sharing this way for compatibility reasons, but it's frustrating that IT are so unfamiliar with...

*SOVLED* CIFS Mounted Drive Not Showing All Folders Ubuntu 18.04

Hey everyone, At work our we have Windows 10 machines that we use for general tasks and also SSH into our Ubuntu 18.04 VMs to do our heavu computational work. For some reason, certain folders within the drive are invisible on the VMs, but are definitely there. We can see them on Windows and we...

Ubuntu: List all connections to a single nic command?

If anyone else comes across this, I've found arp-scan was also good (not installed by default "sudo apt-get install arp-scan"). You can use "sudo arp-scan -l --interface=wlan0" where wlan0 is the name of the connection you want to look at (which you can check with "ifconfig"). This will give...

Ubuntu: List all connections to a single nic command?

I've installed Ubuntu on my work PC to get around a lot of the restrictions placed on the Windows 7 install they give us, and one of the things I've done is set up a WiFi hotspot for us to use. I'd like to monitor connections and/or traffic on the hotspot, but if I try to list all of the...
