    BBQ: Charcoal vs Gas

Buy a Weber Mastertouch 57cm. Great bit of kit - mine is currently doing a 5.5lb pork shoulder in it and has been on since midday with limited checking. I've got 2 of them. Nearly bought a gas grill as well last year but ended up deciding against it and buying another Weber!

Linux tech stack exposure and future prospects

Go for 1. AWS is worth having. ELBs aren't rocket science to set up though. Job 2 is a bit more mundane. Puppet / Chef / Ansible etc can be learnt as you go along. Also - working for a museum? Screw that. I've been on a Puppet Labs training course in a previous role. I don't use it now...

Defining a functional area for java project

As RMI? RMI to me (been doing Java for a long time - 13 or so years) means Remote Method Invocation... Anyway - functional areas: Sites: * Sites and regions * Popularity 'engine' (could probably tie to first area) * Advertising mechanism Reporting * Reporting mechanism...

Career Direction - Lead developer/Technical Architect

Considered technical pre sales / solution architecture? Would be more customer facing as well as a chance to do tech stuff.

    Github

Used to be a massive Perforce fan (hell, I still use P4V for my main difftool!). Then I started using Git. Spent a year swearing at it. Now I'd not go back to Perforce. It's awesome. Pretty steep learning curve, but it's a damn good bit of kit. You can't half get yourself into some weird...

Struggling to make the next move / career change!

+1 for a sideways move. Or, jump ship? Market is looking relatively good right now for dev roles in the south east, although I'm a Java guy predominantly. Also it's not impossible to find out who you are based on the content of the LinkedIn profile and putting 2+2 together.

    Buying share of flat freehold?

I live in a development of 62 flats. The freehold is up for sale. What do people think regards to buying a share of it? The current leasehold has circa 91 years remaining (off the top of my head) and the cost to buy the freehold is roughly £375k if I remember right, shared across the 62 flats...

Choosing to go for a new job in the US, how to handle it?

Are they willing to recruit from outside the US? It can be a pain for visas etc. You'd also want to look into the visa type that they are willing to sponsor you for.

Cordless phone with nuisance call blocking - opinions

My folks have the BT ones. They work well and have stopped them from getting cold calls. Pretty easy to set up too.

    Is this asbestos?

Insulation is pretty unlikely, but Asbestos Insulation Board is a possibility in houses. Pretty nasty stuff although safe if in good condition and undisturbed. Think there was a thread on here a while ago with a guy who had a load in the ceiling of his garage. That said, it's kind of...

    AC Condenser replacement cost?

2009 - 2.3 Petrol (MPS). Cheers all. I agree it's probably just corroded - it does hold pressure but I think I'd rather get it sorted than have it crap out in the summer!

    AC Condenser replacement cost?

Got my car (Mazda 3) back from a service today. One of the notes mentions 'AC condenser coming apart'. Bit of a strange one but i guess things can fail. Anyone got a rough idea on how much a replacement is likely to be (my best guess is a few hundred) / whether they're known for failing...

mazda 3 - mps body parts fit not mps?

30 miles a day of Staines -> Maidenhead gets me about 29 mpg. My trip computer shows an average of 30.1 mpg right now, but it's a bit optimistic. It's not _that_ bad on fuel really!

    On-Call rates

Used to get £400/week for doing it as part of a rota which meant I was on call around each 6 weeks. These days it's £0, but it's a best effort thing rather than contractual so not so bad.

mazda 3 - mps body parts fit not mps?

Around 2008/2009 they were reasonably popular - think it was a mix of the mk1's appearance and the performance on offer. A bit of a sleeper.

mazda 3 - mps body parts fit not mps?

Done 25k in my MK2 3 MPS now. To be fair, it does drive a little like a diesel - there's a fair bit of low down torque. MPG wise I get about 30 to the gallon just about. That's running on Shell VPower. I'm joining the bandwagon here to state that you're best off leaving the car stock...

*** The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Thread ***

It's possible that VF don't co-locate their 4G and 3G kit. That said, I'd strongly assume that the mast is 4G enabled - I live inside the M25 and VF's coverage map shows 100% coverage for 4G. Annoyingly Sitefinder doesn't show whether masts are LTE enabled. Reading up about the Z3 compact...

*** The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Thread ***

My old Moto G had better reception on 4G. I can more or less see the mast out of of my window from where I'm sat. Maybe it's coincidental, but I'm not sure.

*** The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact Thread ***

Anyone had any issues with 4G reception? I've been finding I'm getting 1 bar of 4G reception in my flat - I'd expect better as the mast isn't far away. I get full strength 3G reception. Maybe it's time to contact Sony...
