I use a Hoo Too Tripmate. (Hootoo HT-TM01) I can connect any portable USB drive to it and use VLC on my iPad to play various formats (mainly MKV). I use File explorer from the app store to browse the hard drive. The Tripmate also doubles as a charger if your devices are running out of power.

Have you had a look at using the Filestation package with your Synology NAS? Right clicking on the files on your NAS in Filestation gives various sharing options. You can share via email with non account holders and even set time limits as to how long the link is live.

It would be nice if there was 2 of them so that you can still use peripherals while charging.

IOS 8 was never ready for public release. Features withdrawn just before release day followed by a rushed patch that borks handsets. Features that only work if you have the yet unreleased version of OSX. The beta testing leaves a lot to be desired or are we all beta testers these days.
