    NVIDIA 4000 Series

Fair enough :) I wasn't making any comments on what anyone selling a 4090 might use in the interim, be that NVidia or AMD. I have my own opinions on the general NVidia vs AMD argument but I know better than to get into that on here :D

    NVIDIA 4000 Series

Are you sure you're replying to the correct post? I wasn't referrring to switching from NVidia to AMD at all.

    NVIDIA 4000 Series

This is what I don't understand when I see people advocating selling a 4090 now before its value drops when the 5090 is announced & launched. Yes, you may make a few hundred quid more by selling it now but you're then denying yourself the use of it in the interim. That money vs usage equation...

    AMD Zen 5 rumours

I'm hoping they might reduced the 'delay' before the X3D chips appear, simply because the Zen4 X3D parts are likely to be better gaming performers than the Zen5 non-X3D parts which won't exactly encourage upgrades.

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

Spot on. I always do this, get mad ideas in my head, umm and ahh about it for ages then end up doing nothing :D

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

Interesting and, as per the other U4024QW thread, that resolution is very appealing to me but only on a larger panel. At 34", I'd just end up scaling Windows so everything is the same size as before, albeit a bit "smoother" and, in games, would end up using DLSS more often as even a 4090 is...

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

I'm still umming and ahhing. Another factor is there's supposedly a 37.5" 3840x1600 IPS Black panel in production from LG Display so wondering what might appear later this year. An updated LG model or maybe even Alienware will re-enter the fray? If either materialise though you can guarantee...

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

Thanks. Reading up, I'm also slightly concerned that, whilst it appears on NVidia's list G-Sync Compatible monitors, it lists the maximum refresh rate as 144Hz. It's not clear if this is just because that's the "official" maximum, since 160Hz is technically an overclock, or if the VRR support...

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

I presume the gaudy RGB lighting on the back can be fully turned off?

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

My main worries are that the additional 4" and screen space won't be that much in reality and also the switch from full G-Sync to Freesync concerns me a bit.

    LG UltraGear Monitor 38GN950P

To save polluting the other thread any more I'll move in here. I'm contemplating grabbing this monitor as it's now dropped to circa £750. I've been using an Alienware AW3418DW for the last four years and love it and that's part of the issue. Basically, is it worth upgrading from the 34" to...

    Dell U4025QW - 40" 5120x2160 120Hz

Trying to decide if it's 'enough' of an upgrade over my current (native G-Sync) 3440x1440

    Dell U4025QW - 40" 5120x2160 120Hz

Sorry yes the GN. The GL native G-Sync one came first, then the GN Freesync one but both were well into 4 figures. The updated 38GN950P looks pretty much identical to the original but is now available for around £800 which looks like a bargain for a 160Hz 3840x1600 IPS screen.

    Dell U4025QW - 40" 5120x2160 120Hz

I'm actually going off this now. Much as the size, aspect and resolution look great, I'm seeing some conflicting reports about the gaming performance and the lack of any "proper" reviews is putting me off. Now wondering whether to grab an LG 38GL950 and be done with it or wait to see if any...

It won't be though because the only practical way of doing 16GB is with a 256 bit bus and that's problematic both because they reduced the 4070 bus to 192 bit from the 256 of the 3070 and also because, if they gave the 5070 a 256 bit bus, what do they do with the 5080? What we'll likely get is...

It's all relative. I meant that 24GB would be too much for a xx70 series card within NVidia's product stack.

    Blackwell gpus

Well they also "downgraded" with the 3080 which had 10GB compared to the 11GB of the 2080Ti and 1080Ti before it. Even still, I'd frankly be amazed if they tried to sell a 5070 10GB in 2024/25 - the press would crucify them.

I presume you refer to this as a downgrade relative to the 3060 which had 12GB. Funny thing is, the 3060 only had 12GB for the very reasons stated above, namely the 192 bit bus dictated multiples of 6 memory chips so it was either 12GB or 6GB and the latter clearly wasn't enough, even for...

    Blackwell gpus

160 bit is awkward precisely because of the memory configuration implications. They squeezed bus widths on the 40-series cards and the 4070 has a 192 bit bus whilst the 4060 is 128 bit. Logically you could see them leveraging the faster speeds of GDDR7 to reduce the 5070 to 160 bit but this...

    Blackwell gpus

What? Memory size depends on both the memory module size and the overall bus width. The memory chips have a 32 bit interface so the number of chips is determined by the bus width divided by 32 and cards must have a multiple of this number of chips. A card with a 384 bit bus thus uses a...
