Except if they're a stinking late entry officer...oops, did I just say that?! ;)

    Calling military experts

Army officers aren't awarded the LS&CG medal: it's expected that their behaviour is beyond reproach.

The only bit of Gucci kit I bought was a softie jacket. And now they issue them!

Agreed. But this is very, very different from having to go buy issued kit. Also, soldiers have a perverse habit of buying [expensivie] Gucci kit when there is an issued alternative

Why let the truth get in the way of a vitriolic opinion!

In etom's defence, he should have it replaced by his quartermaster's department. Training establishments, like the one etom is in, always struggle though as the kit gets thrashed. It also doesn't help that the Army are in the middle of switching to new style patterning on clothes and webbing -...

Yeah, they've always got boots :D Keep badgering them — it's easy for them to fob you off rather than making an effort for you! At my last unit they only gave out 1 ammo pouch and a utility pouch per person - webbing looked chippy! That said, you should have a better experience after training.

etom, you should not be forced to spend money like that. If your issued kit is broken, ask your CQMS/QM's Dept to exchange it. Officers at Sandhurst aren't allowed to take any non-issue kit on exercise. They do that to demonstrate to us that issue stuff is just fine. And yes, that meant no...

The kit issued for Afghan is now very good. The boots are fine and soldiers wouldn't be wearing any non-issued clothing. I think most of these stories come from our 2003 days in Iraq—we weren't prepared at all for that.

I don't disagree with this at all. However, the whole purpose of vote-by-proxy is to mitigate this. If the soldier chooses not to accept this alternative method of making their vote, that's the risk they take. I use the former method. Every year I receive paperwork to my home address which...

    Army troop budgets

All soldiers are encouraged to set-up other means of using their vote whilst deployed either abroad or on operations. Having lived in Germany for the last three years I know very well that soldiers are reminded regularly to apply for vote-by-proxy. It really has nothing to do with the Labour...

    Army troop budgets

Hi I'm a serving officer in the Army. I've been to both Iraq and Afghanistan and worked in a unit as a Troop Commander, Squadron Second-in-Command and Adjutant. I've worked in a Divisional HQ on operations. A Commanding Officer will indeed have a budget to run his unit for the financial...

Will I able to use my Visa debit card abroad?

I live in Münster and have come across some trouble. When I first got here many of the ATMs wouldn't let me withdraw money; Sparkasse works fine though. Also many shops don't accept Visa for payment so never assume! And that goes for Visa debit as well as credit cards...crazy, I know.

    Here we go again. :(

Having just spent six months in Afghanistan, rain, the cold and cosy dark evenings are a welcome novelty at the moment :D I guess it's all a matter of perspective? ;)

Agreed. I recommend people read up on the law of armed conflict (LOAC), jus ad bellam and jus in bello.

Five British soldiers shot dead in Afghanistan

Well, you can't de-link the objective of British forces from NATO as the mission of the British task force comes from the NATO chain-of-command. NATO specify a mission to General McCrystal who is the commander of ISAF forces in Afghanistan. He then works out how he wants to achieve this and...

Five British soldiers shot dead in Afghanistan

The British are there to support the NATO-led mission. NATO's role in Afghanistan is explained in detail here: http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/topics_8189.htm. It would be an injustice for me to attempt to paraphrase it so I would encourage you to read it. I've just read through that page...

Five British soldiers shot dead in Afghanistan

Hi guys. I flew back from theatre yesterday. I worked as a planner in the divisional HQ in southern Afghanistan. My level of situational awareness is very high (and current) due to the position I worked. There seems to be some concern and confusion with regards to the British involvement in...
