Thanks for digging the thread up again, it's been a while since I did much retro but got really into it, setup as an Instagram showcase as retronow.blog but life takes over. Nice idea for a project, probably what I'd do too is replace with an Intel and re-case. Keep us all posted!

You've probably installed Windows more times than you care to remember, I know I have. If it wasn't for the bug of nostalgia I'd not be doing it again, it's bizzare.

The BBC Acorn was great, I had one as a kid which came with an external 5.25" drive and a heap load of games. Funny enough I've got one, might upload a few snaps of all the pixelated fun.

Fingers crossed it all seems pretty stable on this setup. Having said that I'm doing a few other vintage builds on the go and I've had one particular system with so many blue screen issues. I think the experience can be quite different based on the hardware. Back in the day the first family...

It's a dream to build a PC today, much like the operating systems are much faster and easier to install. I've found that building retro PC's you encounter problems much like you did twenty years ago, it's a strange mix of nostalgic pleasure and frustration. Today though one thing that's easier...

... Forgot to mention I added a 5.25" floppy drive and the CD-ROM drives I tried weren't up to the job so I replaced it with an early DVD drive. @LewisRaz Yeah, it'll have more use now it's all put together and out of the loft.

Came across this build in the loft the other day and it's a long time since I gave an update on this thread, so here goes... I switched the Intel 486 DX4 100 with a later '94 edition Intel 486 DX4 100 with writeback cache. Swapped the Creative Soundblaster AWE64 Gold with an early edition...

It's a shame if you can't convince them. I suppose you could still show them what a working Pentium I or older machines are at on eBay. You'd be surprised how much a 486 CPU and motherboard can fetch, I've seem them go from anywhere from £30 to over £100. VLB Cards can sell for silly prices...

Go for Windows Server if you don't fancy Linux instead of Windows 7/10 as it doesn't have all the graphical enhancements and uses fewer resources. Install BOINC as a service. As already mentioned don't bother with the screensaver.

Could be a simple chatroom, might be a nice alternative to another set of forums however forums are a bit more structured. Could maybe pull in some stats for the live sprint, provided there's some API that can be tapped.
