Mainly development work. Basically a mix of dev tooling plus Postgres / MongoDB / Kubernetes / RabbitMQ etc. Running a full up cloud application but locally for test & development
Fast storage for the database would be nice and lots or memory, 64GB+
I was looking at buying a Deskmini X600 with 8700G. However I've just seen the BD770i from Minisforumn which give a system for a similar price (need case & PSU). Or even a DB790i for a small uplift.
Looking at the few benchmarks I can find, the 7745HX seems to be the faster chip for compute ...
So now the 8000G series have been confirmed, recommendations for a Mini PC to put it in ?
I've used DeskMini's before with good results but no AM5 one's available so what to go for ?
I make small batches of circuit boards for various hobby applications. I tend to sell off the surplus boards but ensure I don't go over the £1000 limit as the sudden extra paperwork just doesn't make it worth my while, especially as the limit is turnover rather than profit. The surplus boards...
Anyone have a view on this ?
MongoDB likes lots of memory and fast cores. I'm curious if the extra cache of X3D, of say the 7800X3D, would give better performance than the faster clocks of the 7700X ?
I'm looking for an AMD mini-ITX board that is happy to support 2 x 48GB DIMM's. CPU will be either an 7700x or 7950x. Will need 2 x M2 slots (Gen 4.0 / 5.0 ?) and 2.5GbE network (is 10GbE available ?)
mini-ITX reviews seem to be fairly few and far between unfortunately
I am not interested in...
I could really make use of a 7945HX based SFF machine as a compact development workstation. A couple of questions:
1. Does anyone know if someone is making / going to make one ? I can only seem to find laptops at the moment with this chip ?
2. Do these new AMD chips support the 48GB SO-DIMM's...
Any idea if we are likely to see follow on products for the 5600G / 5700G 65W devices using Zen 4 cores and DD5 ?
I could make good use of something like an ASRock DeskMini with a higher performance CPU !
The basic machine seem a good idea but I think the answer is very much it depends. What are you planning on running in the Docker Containers ? A couple of big apps plus data storage etc and things may get a bit tight.
Personally I would try to go for more memory before a bigger processor. If...
I was looking for either a shuttle or asrock deskmini machine with support for 12th gen 65W parts (Alder Lake). Seems they don't exists and I see no signs of them appearing any time soon, if ever.
Is 12th gen being skipped in favour of waiting for Raptor Lake to appear since its scheduled for...
Didn't realize this was released today. Well its nearly midnight as I write this and they are still in stock here and at NVIDIA.
Seems we have hit peak graphics card after all
Some of us software people are (were ?) real engineers :p, doing the stuff that tends to lead to news headlines and dead people when it goes wrong . Even got all the bits of paper, chartered etc. Problem is, it doesn't pay. Gave up eventually and now just hack code, its easier, has...
I've been looking for either a DeskMini H470 or Shuttle DH470 for a 10900 CPU. Can't seem to find either - have they gone end-of-life ???
Thought maybe there are have Alder Lake based successors being made available but I'm not seeing any evidence they may be being developed.
Is this just...
Why ?, so it's in line with their 5950x being priced over £110 more than one from A.N.Other major retailer :D
...and no, I don't think AMD will drop prices while they can sell everything they can make
Has anyone seen anything on how Linux will handle the big/little core architecture ?
Everything I've seen so far only seems to talk about Windows (usually 11).
