Not usually, again it will depend on the species to some extent, but the vast majority of males just want to get in there, shoot their load, then make a run for it. If the female manages to nail them in the carapace, then it's game over. If she grabs a leg then the male could potentially...

Actually, having a fear of house spiders, and not tarantulas, is more common than you may think. ;) Show her some pictures and see what the reaction is? :D

Lifespan depends on the species, for example the Brachypelma smithi has been known to live anywhere between 20 -30 years in captivity (female obviously). In comparison, an Avicularia species (again female) may live 10 years. There are some other species where the females will live for less...
