New system for gaming and VR

I VR game in 4K and do various other stuff, here's my build for comparison: AMD R9 7950X, £540 (consider also R9 7900X, £390) EK Nucleus AIO CR360, £110 (I have the RGB version because tasteful colours) ASUS ProArt X670-E Creator WIFI, £540 Corsair Dominator Platinum 2x32 GB DDR5 6000MT/s, £210...

Budget of around £2400 but could push a little more for the right kit

I built a machine in a 4000D last year, very good-looking case. Used the older 400D for a long time and it felt a little cramped for airflow, I rate the build and finish of the 4000D though. You may want to invest in some magnetic fine mesh filters if you're in a dusty/pet hair-heavy environment...

    Wired router.

Bear in mind the UDMP backplane for its internal switch is 1 Gbit/sec. If you want >1 Gbps switching including to the WAN, you'll need to also buy a Unifi USW-Pro/Enterprise and link it to the UDMP via the SFP+ LAN port, as the UDMP's SFP+ ports are 10 Gbps to the CPU.

    City Fibre

If you can stretch your budget a bit, the Ubiquiti UDM is ~£300, otherwise anything on OpenWRT's "recommended routers" wiki page is a good place to start.

New router is no better than my SuperHub5

Is your WiFi environment congested? Loads of neighbours all using the same bands? If so, tried a DFS channel or narrowing the channel width? Android is your friend here as you can easily perform site surveys using various free/freemium apps from the Play store. Net Analyzer, Aruba Utilities...

Help chosing a new FTTP provider

Another Aquiss punter here. Customer service is great and Martin is very knowledgeable and answers tickets at all hours - definitely 'one of us'. I've had a handful of brief outages, all due to Openreach, so that's a limiting factor if it's important to you. If you already have compatible router...

    Wireless reciever with ethernet port

Bit late to the party, but something like the GL-iNet Slate/Opal/Beryl models will do what you want when running in AP mode. LTT recently reviewed one favourably and Jake went into some depth demonstrating the features. Good WiFi performance. Not used one personally and apparently they just...

    Plusnet Discussion Thread

I would go Aquiss for the great customer service (I am an Aquiss customer by recommendation of a colleague), benefit from the static IP and dual stack v4/v6, and just use NordVPN or some other throwaway VPN service with hundreds of UK nodes for connecting in to the incompetent sysadmin's...

    Are all LED floodlights garbage?

If we're talking externals, I fit some Philips Ledinaire LEDs on my house, good even sweep, accurate target white point, easy to dial in the sensor settings and a clever override you can do to force them constant-on temporarily if they're on a switched circuit. Easy to fit.

    Energy Suppliers

The idea with heat pumps is that you keep your home space heated to perhaps a slightly lower temperature than a gas boiler central heating system might initially target, dialing in the hysteresis to keep the temp floating nicely. Tap and shower/bath hot water is handled separately. Sometimes...

    *** VPN Thread ***

Torguard specifically allow P2P and you can get packages with static IPs and do port forwarding. Used them for years, my NAS is VPNed 24/7 and the mobile client is OK too. I have their package with static IPs and two 'streaming IPs' in two locations of my choice, useful when I was travelling...

I also switched to Aquiss and have been happily on their 1000/115 package since last September. No problems at all. I use a UDM Pro. Really appreciated that they 50% discounted the first six months of service to subsidise the cost of buying your own CPE. Technical support from Martin has been...

*** Official Hyperoptic Discussion Thread ***

Engaged with Hyperoptic CS about this? if you provide traceroutes over IPv4 and IPv6 (if you're running dual stack) then they can go off and investigate with their peering partners. Could be that the provider hosting the server you're playing on has rubbish upstream connectivity, or it could be...

petrol stations price discussion (was ‘chaos’)

1.37 Costco Manchester and adjacent ASDA and Eccles Morrison are both 1.38; other stations and brands are in the mid-1.40s already for E10.

Aquiss are excellent regarding technical support and presales queries, I'm with them for gigabit FTTP. Sadly only the Openreach-based packages so not symmetric in my area, but that's all I can get. They're a longtime Entanet reseller (now Cityfibre). Curious, any reason to keep the line rental...

petrol stations price discussion (was ‘chaos’)

Perhaps coincidence, but a Tesco PFS near Wigan this afternoon had no diesel and no E5, only E10. 157.9 for E10. First station this week I've seen on my travels with any closed pumps.

Why do people seriously do this?

Quite a few, their drivetrains are basically weatherproof and probably waterproof, certainly I've not seen one dead in the water, they just submarine their way through. Though I expect Teslas leak into the cabin a bit given their legendary panel fitment quality.

Can you change a flat tyre on your car?

I've swapped my own wheels over several times (bought some lighter wheels and had fresh rubber put on them). I'm glad I had a second set of wheels because one afternoon I came back to the car to find a screw jauntily stuck out of a sidewall at a diagonal. Must have obtained it the night before...

    **Unofficial Tyre Thread**

parroting what I've read and watched online, the PS5 is definitely successor to PS4 in terms of design whereas PS4S is different construction, superior performance at higher wheel sizes and AIUI is more like the follow-up to PSS. Cup 2 is track-focused dry tyre. My experience only goes as far as...
