Advice on PCIe Lanes & NVME RAID arrays et al. for possible upgrade/new computer

Seems unusual to me to have a need to RAID such a fast drive. I used to RAID my spinning HDDs for speed purposes but that's not relevant with NVME as they're so fast anyway. Or you'd RAID for the mirror aspects, but why not do that on a traditional HDD. I've not personally come across a...

    Upgrade, or no?

Thanks - I assume the difference between the existing 3600Mhz and new 3200Mhz would be negligible outside of benchmarking? I'd possibly go 64GB for the hell of it as that should see me through another 2-3 years by which time I'm sure I'd be ready for a proper upgrade along with GPU. :D I never...

    Upgrade, or no?

Per my signature, I'm rocking a Ryzen 3600x with 16GB DDR4 RAM. I'm considering an upgrade to get a bit more performance on productivity apps - On1 Photo Raw in particular which seems to gobble up every ounce of CPU and RAM that's thrown at it. Gaming is light, so happy to stick with the...

Having an itch to upgrade and need some advice please !

I'd give the cable a bit of abuse - just bend it round a bit, see if it starts flickering or cutting out. If it's really sensitive, I'd look to replace it and then see what happens.

Having an itch to upgrade and need some advice please !

Well if you have to game for a long stretch in the interests of "testing and research"... I had constant microstutter, freezing and crashing issues on my PC for ages. Couldn't figure out for the life of me what was causing it - tested everything, no errors ever found. Finally figured out it...

3600x to 5900x, plus RAM increase

Doesn't look like they do CAS 17 in the 2 x 16GB kit. We can but see what happens - I was only really planning on 32GB (640K ought to be enough for anyone, right) so it's no great loss if I can't get them to behave correctly together. If they do, then there's a bit of a bonus.

3600x to 5900x, plus RAM increase

Thank you! I should be ok with all of that and an added bonus to not have to reinstall Windows.

3600x to 5900x, plus RAM increase

Thinking of swapping the processor on by B450 MAX board, plus adding 2 x 16GB RAM modules to the existing 2 x 8GB, taking me to 48GB across the 4 modules. ON1 Photo Raw is a complete hog on both CPU and RAM, so thinking the extra cores will be worthwhile. Just wanted to check that the 5900x...

    PSU recommendation

I think I'm going to take a punt on it. Reviews very well and only consistent criticism seems to be lack of availability, comes with a 10 year warranty and seems to have a high number of connectors with cables at decent lengths.

I don't think it is. I'm looking at the X pro rather than G pro. Equivalent review here: https://www.anandtech.com/show/18752/the-fsp-hydro-ptm-x-pro-1000w-atx-30-psu-review

There's a quiet corner of the internet where they seem to be in stock. Seems to review pretty well, albeit not as well as the ti. Practically this should be good. https://www.kitguru.net/components/power-supplies/zardon/fsp-hydro-ptm-x-pro-1200w-platinum-review/

Ah, I now see what you mean about the cable and that there are two iterations which look pretty identical. I'm now looking at the FSP hydro ptm X pro, either 1000w or 1200w. Not sure I can justify the cost of the ti pro.

I guess you're right - there wouldn't be anything being sold by the likes of Corsair that isn't fit for purpose. But as I understand it the additional 4 pins are to allow the GPU to communicate back to the PSU so in theory, if not in real-world usage, the simple cable implementation isn't as...

Well thanks to both of you - I'll take it away and do a bit more research and then hit the buy button on something. Low noise is quite important so will keep that in mind. Oops, skipped over that link the first time. Thanks for sharing - will give both of the reviews a read. I'll Scratch...

Is there an efficiency or noise-level benefit in running a bigger PSU at lower load percentages? Will do some more research on cable length vs what I need in my case. The Thermaltake certainly comes with a lot of connectors but perhaps a bit short in length. I see there's an ASUS TUF and MSI...

    PSU recommendation

Thanks for that. With PC power requirements only heading in one direction at the moment, I'd be inclined to go for the higher wattage of option three, not to mention the future proofing of atx3. Might it even be worth getting the 1200w version? I assume the latest iterations will still be...

Remember the Hiper 'Explosive' 580W PSUs? Why did they blow up?

I'm wondering where my tub went to now. It was in use for years as my "PC bits and bobs" storage box. Funny how such a small thing made such an impression on so many. PSU didn't blow up but pretty sure it was responsible for taking out a graphics card, so got replaced back in 2009.

Hi I'm having intermittent reboot issues on my PC and I have a bit of a feeling it's power related. I have a Corsair TX 850w PSU that I bought back in the crazy days of 2009, so reckon that's probably done enough hours. What would be the recommendation for something very quiet but reliable...

    Micro-freezing issue

BIOS update from some 2021 version to most recent version appears to have fixed the issue. Now that I know where to look, I can see the internet had something to say about this issue! Cheer boss!
