Thank you that's really useful! So would I be right in thinking that the higher the TGP the better?

    Gaming/Work Laptop for £1800-2000?

Thanks that's good to know! And yes I agree - I'm finding this all a bit of a confusing minefield - and I've been building PC's since the mid 90s :( Is there a way of being able to tell from the specs which RTX card comes in a laptop? All the ones i've seen so far just describe them as RTX...

    Gaming/Work Laptop for £1800-2000?

Oh!! Ok, so now you've gone and thrown a massive spanner in the works! I hadn't seen the H1 before - that's absolutely tiny and may actually fit... Now I'm thinking I might need to go back to the drawing board for a rethink before I spend crazy amounts on a laptop! I was this close...

    Gaming/Work Laptop for £1800-2000?

I'm an absolute laptop n00b (or nob..). I've never bought/owned a laptop before, as I've always just built my own PC every 3-4 years. So I could really use some advice please! I plan to ditch my desktop PC, and use the laptop as a permanent static feature on the desk. It'll be connected to...

    Memory woes...

Thanks so much for the wealth of info you've posted! It explains lot with regard to why I couldn't get the 128MB running! I'd be more than happy to help with the BIOS - drop me a message with the instructions and I'll get this done for you tomorrow :D

XP Laptop - Can't use an external Monitor?

Yup, that's set to do nothing when the lid is closed. Bit of a head scratcher this one :(

XP Laptop - Can't use an external Monitor?

I have an old Acer Aspire 5601 laptop running XP SP3 which I have set up for retro gaming. I'd like to use an external monitor with it as the laptop's own screen is starting to looking a bit dark these days. I basically want to be able to close the laptop lid and just use it with the external...

Using Windows 98 with large Hard Disks?

Aaaah thank you, that explains it! I'll go with a 32GB drive and 1GB ram for the moment then - that will be far more than enough for my purposes anyway in all honesty! (I say that now.. lol)

Using Windows 98 with large Hard Disks?

Thanks, that's good to know! I'll crack it open and see if I can take out some of the ram :)

Using Windows 98 with large Hard Disks?

Thank you :) Unfortunately I can't use a boot disk (no floppy drive), but I've just taken a look at FDISK - It was reporting that the primary (only) partition was already FAT32. I deleted it and created a new primary partition - FDISK is still saying it's FAT32, but now it's giving me 29GB...

Using Windows 98 with large Hard Disks?

So whilst clearing out the loft today I discovered an old Windows XP laptop, nothing fancy, just a 1.6ghz core duo with 2GB of RAM. It works perfectly, so I figured I'd slap Win98SE onto it and use it as a portable retro gaming machine. However... I've just formatted the drive and it's only...

    Looking for a laptop suggestion

I need to grab a laptop for working from home - general office apps, mainly Excel and email (I already have an MS Office license). But I'd also like to be able to play the occasional game in my downtime. I prefer single player, retro games (mainly old strategy and point n click games) and so I...

    Memory woes...

I was hoping it might help a little with some of the more demanding games. For example, I play Diablo II and even though the machine is below the minimum spec it runs ok, but frame rates do drop a bit at times. I was holding out a little bit of hope that adding some more RAM might help with...

Hmmm no I haven't - do you think that could make a difference? I'll give it a try this weekend :)

    Memory woes...

The BIOS is - AMIBIOS version 1.00.07.DQ0T UAV Unfortunately this is the only machine I can test on - although I'm thinking it would be seriously bad luck to have bought 3 lots of (allegedly) "tested" memory from 3 different sellers and to find that all 3 are faulty

    Memory woes...

Some of the forum members here helped me to try and narrow it down and we think it's probably this - http://www.uncreativelabs.de/th99/m/I-L/34285.htm It's in a Gateway 2000 system so there isn't much in the way of identifying marks in there. I've bought a bunch of modules now off Ebay and...

    Memory woes...

I've been having problems for a little while whilst trying to increase the RAM in mywindows 98 machine. I've bought several modules but none of them work - I get a long beep on start up, there's no display and the system doesn't POST. Can anyone help advise where I might be going wrong...

    DisplayPort Weirdness

Since the day I bought my monitor - an ultrawide Asus PB298Q - (about 5 years ago), I have had issues with using Displayport. Initially it worked, but only one time. After it was rebooted the monitor just reported “No Signal”. This was in a PC with a GTX970 and Asus Maximus VII Ranger...
